on the left is chanlum | on right no luminance (the original scene),
I think it looks great with the luminance!

although i agree the right does look good... the thing that chanlum gives to the left hand side is a little more colour variation and warmth. though to a certain extent it does look waxy rather than soft. for me the left somehow has a little bit more 'life'... the right is somehow deader... flatter. but maybe that's just me. the other thing to remember with black/dark skin is that because there's more pigment nearer the surface you just don't get as much sub surface light scattering as you do with white skin, so maybe it's not so "true" to use chanlum on this particular face.
