I am about to start following the Digital Hair - Full Tilt tutorial (http://www.menithings.com/How/Tilt/Hair/Tilt_Hair_01.html) of Aristomenis Tsirbas, from Menithings (http://www.menithings.com).
However, does someone knows if we (max4 users) also have those "Clip Maps" as Lightwave does?
They seem to be the corner stone of this tutorial.

Also on this topic, has anyone tried "Hair (http://www.max3dstuff.com/max4/hair/help.html)", it's freeware I think. I was wondering how stable it is.

If anyone has tips on doing hair it'll be very appreciated :)
Just don't advise me to get Shag Hair as I can't afford it :annoyed:

Thanks in advance all,

Clip maps are like Opacity Maps with the exception that they actually clip the geometry. The equivalent in MAX would be to raytrace through opacity maps.

I used the same method as the one described in the tut for a model I made lately. It worked very well for me. I used a single strand geometry with a FFD modifier applied to it and made several copies to match the head shape. It’s rather time consuming but it has some advantages over ShagHair or other similar plug-ins.
1. speed . If you have a xshadow (goes with Forest Pro) it’s a matter of seconds to render.
2. control - you’ve got all your strands where you want them.
3. easy to apply dynamic effects – wind, gravity …

Just one tip: remember to use your opacity map for specular/glossiness and/or bump.
You’ll see the difference.
