View Full Version : Spline Cage Modeling
Trion-5 09-20-2002, 12:55 AM I've sorta fiddled around with trying to figure out how to "spline cage model".
Well These are the steps i've put together.
1. Lay out the perimeter splines
2. Inserts verts where i find necessary
3. Add Vertical and Horizontal Splines
4. Attach all splines
5. Align vertices where necessary then fuse them together
6. Move all "fused" vertices to desired position
7. Apply "surface" modifier
One problem I've ran into...
I must highlight both vertices at intersection and move them together since they are not trully connected.
Can anyone refine this for me?:wavey:

One of my suggestions would be to apply the surface modifier from the begining. The first thing I do when I am using this method is apply the surface modifer and then create a reference. This way you can quickly identify problems with the mesh and see how your cage is influencing your surface in real time.

best steps for spline modeling are here (this is for a head)
1 get your ref images together
2 start with one small area like the eye outlineing it
3 turn on 3d snap and check vertex snap (will keep all the points lined up)
4 outline all the major contours
5 pull it into 3d after you outline
6 create a referance
7 add surface modifier and pull points till the head looks right
those are the fast and simple steps
its harder than it sounds but it gets you going
with 3dsnap on you wont have many problems with having to line up the points on top of each other
and when creating more lines uncheck create new line
this saves you from having to attach them all together

Thank you both.
SO there is no way to "weld" those vertices permenantly?

yes you can weld endpoints too
ive been learning that welding with splines should be done to create good lines
meaning takes the edges for the outline and weld the endpoints making it one line for smoother tranformations
if your getting the weld error (cant think of exact message) then just up the weld distance or fuse the points together then weld

The answer to your question is to tick the little checkbox in the Editable Spline modify panel (I think) called "area selection". If two verts are fused you'll select both of them with a single click. If you want to separate them again just uncheck the box.

[superfluous message, hadn't read the entire thread I guess]
