View Full Version : Ignore occluded objects when selecting?

How can I set up Maya so when I draw a selection using either the selection tool or the lasso tool, only the elements that are directly visible are selected? Very often when editing poly meshes, I select a couple of vertices/faces on one side of the mesh, but several others on the back of the mesh are added to the selection as well. Cleaning those up can be painful at times, so a solution would be greatly appreciated.

You can enable "Backface culling". To do this, select your geometry and use the pulldown menu "Display > Custom Polygon Display > Options box". At the bottom of the settings window is a drop-down list for "Backface Culling". Set that to On and you should be set to only select components that are not currently selected and on the front side of the geometry facing the camera.

thanks, but it doesn't seem to work that way

when i enable backface culling the back faces do disappear, but if i switch to face selection mode, the wireframe remains there, even though the polys are not being rendered. the wireframe still makes all occluded objects selectable :(

Not sure what's going on. When I follow these steps it works fine for me:

1) Create a poly sphere
2) Select the sphere and open the Custom Polygon Display window. (Edit > Custom Polygon Display > Options box)
3) Endable Backface Culling. (On)
4) Right click on the sphere and select "Faces" from the menu.
5) Marque select some faces.

Now when I rotate the camera around to the back of the sphere, no faces are selected back there. The only way faces on the back of the sphere get selected is if they are already selected when I rotate the camera and marque select again. The ones inside the marque window, that are already selected, will stay selected. But, no new faces back there will be added to the new selection.

i've solved the problem! i thought the shading > backface culling option did the same thing. i enabled backface culling through display > custom poly display and it works flawlessly! thank you very much.
