View Full Version : Glass See Through Letter
Scripter 03-05-2005, 04:39 AM hey guys i know this is really basic to a bunch of you but im having a problem. I created a letter and made it glossy and all but I want to change a few things. I want to make it more like a window looking type texture, see through. i am using 3d studio max7 for this, my image is attached.
i dont expect anyone to do it for me but if you could just point me in the right direction id appreciate it.
thanks

You could apply an architectural material. Then for the type, choose glass (clear). Then change the color to whatever you want.
-Or-
You could make a raytrace material. Enable fresnel reflections (or use a falloff map set to fresnel in the reflection slot). Enable 2 sided material. Set the transparancy to white.

I would go with the raytrace, better options there. The generic glass material will look like a donkey's ass if you don't know how to manipulate it properly. I'm assuming you're a new user to max!

ok so here i am trying to create this glass like RED letter G using that tutorial which was posted by AFL_HAN and i still didnt get it to look like that. I do have the glassy G see through effect going on but I just cant get the colors to look like in the tutorial. I like how its shot by the light from the top and black all around it.
can anyone help me?
the G that isnt rendered looks pretty good, but once i render it, the colors really look like crap.

General rule #1: Anything reflective will only look as good as it's environment. Looks like your just using the default black color...which is why the glass turns black.
Tips:
There's a MR glass scene or two that comes with Max 6 & 7. Review those.
I have several MR scenes on my website that you can download and review....there's even one with glass text.

its all about whats in the einvironment...a very simple way would be to put a hdr image in the environment slot of the raytrace material. And maybe you should really use a torus knot as an object and play around with it because the geometry is important to. A glass looks completly different compared to a window ..although its both made of the same material know what i mean ?? lol i suck at explaining stuff... but i know one thing: Dont give up you can learn it for sure :D
