"In a recent interview with overseas trade publication MCV, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata talked about the company's forthcoming home console, codenamed Revolution. Iwata reiterated that the platform would be fundamentally different from other game systems, and said that its unique make-up could potentially alienate third party publishers, or in contrast draw them in. Wasn't the Gamecube supposed to have a revolutionary new design different from any other game system?

and said that its unique make-up could potentially alienate third party publishers, or in contrast draw them in."
I'll hold off a little on this one, since I have no way of knowing exactly what this "unique make-up" is. But it seems to me that more than anything else, Nintendo should mostly be focusing on pulling in as many 3rd party developers as possible right now. Not that I have a problem with innovation or anything; it just seems that doing anything that would potentially drive developers away at this point would be suicide for Nintendo's hardware division.

i'm a firm believer that Nintendo doesn't need any other company besides Nintendo.

if all third party companies stopped making games for the Nintendo, they still would turn a profit.

I went to Blockbuster the other day with my buddy to rent a game for his gamecube. It's so sad how few really desirable gc games there are. It seems like a most of the titles are just generic crap, or stuff aimed at caual gamers. I hope Revolution does better in that regard.

umm well not really if you look at the average sony or xbox owner, they are casual gamers, and they see nintendos new ideas as childish or kiddy. THe ps and xbox are aimed more at older age groups who would just play games in spare time, unlike nintendo games which are aimed at the whole family. However sony does have some exeptional games on it platform, mgs series ico ect ect. but nintendo deffinatley dont aim for just casual gamers.

Actually gamecube games are more hardcore, or more well put more aimed at classsic nintendo players. Thats the reason they dont have a mass appeal and only appeal to the hardcore audience. Games like Viewtiful Joe, mario sunshine, Ikaruga, monkey ball etc really tough as nails.

You get way more casual mass market games (sports, GTA, halo) on the other platforms.

Interesting...this is exactly how I have felt about XBox. Everytime I went to look for an Xbox exclusive game that I'd be interested in, I ended up leaving with nothing. I haven't bought anything for any system recently though so I can't say much about the recent crop of games (I have all current gen systems and I haven't played anything in awhile).

Nintendo seems to be very dedicated to re-energizing the video game landscape...I think they can do it, but time will tell if buyers are interested. It may be that they are simply not interested in changing the way games are played yet, even though Nintendo is (as am I). Nintendo may end up being ahead of their time, which would be very sad. They also need to take their beloved intellectual properties and put them to rest. I love Mario, Link, and the rest, but I only recently realized how tired of them I am.

Get "Oddworld: Stranger" on XBox. It's the best looking XBox title I've ever seen, but more important than the eye candy it is immense fun to play. It just oozes quality. Way better than Halo 2 was, possibly as much fun as Halo. The "live ammo" and 3rd / 1st person viewpoints (for once the inclusion of both view perspectives is perfectly balanced, complementing each other) are amazing and the sense of a "solid" game world is quite breath taking. I'd give it a 10.

I'm not tired of Nintendo's IPs at all. Give me more Metroid and Zelda.

I can't afford tons of games. I just want a few good ones a year, that take longer than an evening to complete...

that's one rumor. some kind of touch screen [kinda like the one on the side of the newer wacom tablets]. also, talks of a 'gyroscope' or something in the controller so it can sense you moving the controller around .

better graphics can only take us so far.

and here is more...

According to the unofficial reports, the new console will come equipped with a hard drive, use tilt sensitive controllers and will be broadband enabled. Games assumed to accompany the release of the new system will be titles from the [i]Mario, Zelda and Super Smash Bros series.

Features that are speculated to be included with the revolution, as reported by computerandvideogames.com are: controllers have tilt-sensing gyroscopes, four controller ports on the system, twin processors and an internal hard drive, connectivity with the new version of the GameBoy, and games will come on HD-DVD discs.

I remember reading an article on the two different mentalities of microsoft and nintendo.

basically microsoft is aiming to make games like movies. Only have one way to interact with the 3d enviroment so that they can market it better, and developers can focus on making games for that enviroment and not have to worry about hardware. Supposedly only focusing on making great games, but within the boundries that microsoft sets. Their way of doing this was going to be by making a common graphics chip for all systems, instead of creating new hardware they would sell their chip and companies could make their own hardware for it. I think playstation is going to win this race if there is one

Nintendo on the other hand was focused more on the system, because if they could create new interactivity they could win over both hardcore and newbies.

Basically in my opinion, microsoft is trying to narrow down the video game world, while nintedo is trying to open it to new possibilities. At least so it seems

Hey, don't get me wrong...I don't think there are many people that like them as much as me. My first computer's name is Samus. My first laptop's name is Link. Both have a great hi-res pic of those characters for their desktop. I'm a horrible, horrible geek about this sorta thing.

But I think that I just wanna remember them for their greatness, not get sick of them. Mario 64 changed the gaming world forever. Mario Sunshine didn't. Great game but nothing new was brought to the table. It bothers me that my last memory of Mario is a game I lost interest in playing before finishing the first 3 stages. Metroid (all of them) are easily in my top three favourite franchises. Metroid Prime was incredible, but Metroid Prime 2 is still in its plastic (for other reasons...but there's no rush). Think of what happened when Nintendo scrapped the 128 Mario's thing for Pikmin, introducing a new character and world. When Nintendo innovates, they succeed. What's the point of a "new" way of gaming if the characters and worlds are not new as well? To me Nintendo has held on to their title as most innovative, but they've also become exceedingly good at milking it.

dotTom, that sounds pretty darn cool...I'll look into that, thanks for the recommendation.

I havent bought any of the next gen consoles, the last I bought was a Dreamcast. I guess I was brought up on Sega and Nintendo so I've just never had the feeling for Sony and MS's efforts. I've played games on those platforms and they are great, Ive just never felt the need to buy a system. Maybe Im an 8/16/32 bit romantic or something :P I'll always follow what Nintendo are doing though because since day 1 their games have always been about the story and the gameplay and as a result theyve had classic after classic. Of late though they seem to have lost some of this magic..as you alluded to Kejimo. Really interested in seeing what the new cube Zelda is up to. Shots and movies Ive seen of it so far look pretty damn sweet. I wonder if it will be enough to make me part with my hard earned though...

sometimes bringing something new to a table isn't the answer. the first 8-bit Zelda was one of the first classics and everyone loved it. then Nintendo went side-scrolling with The Adventure Of Link [which many didn't like]. Then, Nintendo went back to their roots and pulled out the best Zelda [A Link to the Past] which is the same as the first Zelda.

the only thing missing from Mario Sunshine was good level design [playing those cool levels where the evil Mario steals your backpack is the best part of the game!]. here is to hoping the new Mario becomes the sequel to Mario 64.

good games don't need to be re-invented.
