lets say i want to model something like a gun
but if i will use mesh smooth the smoothing will be to strong
how can i do a very soft smoothing

this should be posted in the modelling thread... but use SUBD and increase the tension (weight) on all the points/edges/polys till you get the desired effect. it might be easier if you said which package you were using...

meash selections might be a good bet then... knife close to the egdes or subdivide the surfaces (flat) and make selections of the outer edges for the mesh smooth operator... there was a thread somewhere here.... best do a search

if you are at a low modeling level you can try with the chamfer tool to get sharper edges :shrug:

rip | 15, if you're using MAX and Meshsmooth, I just figured something out that might help-- I've been trying to model a gun in MAX 4.2, and I found that besides chamfering the edges a lot to keep the corners nice, if you change the Smoothness value of the Meshsmooth modifier to something like 0.95 instead of 1, or maybe lower, depending on what you're making.. that might make a difference.
