View Full Version : Actions in Photoshop...
Boxsmiley 03-04-2005, 09:26 PM Is there a way to go into the scripts themselves, and edit them using Text Pad or somethign similar? Any help or push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Can you record the action again? What do you need to do to the Action? If you could be more specific about what you are trying to do we may be able to help you better.

While I don't think you can go into the actual guts of the Actions, you can turn on and off certain steps as well as make it so that the dialog boxes for the Actions show up and you can select the options you want. To turn of certain steps just click the checkbox beside each step in the Action and that will turn it on or off. To make the dialog boxes appear, click the little empty box right next to the checkbox. I take it you know how to record your own Actions already, though. :)

thanks for the replies guys...to be more specific i was wondering if Actions was command line based. So if i wanted to i could leave my comp on at night and Visual Build Pro could run a script which i built to run the Actions in photoshop. That way i come back in the morning and my files are nice and converted and all placed in a proper folder. I believe i may have found a way, but i have to ask for photoshop SDK inorder to accomplish outsource scripting for actions.
If anyone knows any details or even bits of info on this stuff share it please!
Cheers!

Hum you've got scripting which is something in between Actions and the actual PS SDK (which you have to pay for, and it blows...)
I wrote a PS7 tutorial for it and am currently updating it for Photoshop CS:

For batch processes you should have a look at "file - automate - batch" or "file - automate - create droplet". They are based on actions and can work over night on a whole folder (or the items you dropped on it). In my job (prepress) we often use it to convert picture modes and sizes of a selected folder.
If you need conditions inside your script, have a look at ImageReady. Perhaps its functionality is enough for your task. I never tested that.
Next way would be scripting as mlkdesign already said. The CS version is scriptable without plugin. JavaScript (built-in JS framework inside Photoshop) works platform independent. For external scripting use AppleScript on Mac (built in there) or VisualBasic on PC (even a VBA application like Word, Excel etc. should work).
Have a look at the PDFs of the Scripting Guide on your HD or CD to get an Idea how it works or just ask again...
