View Full Version : My new spaceman character
sporadic 03-04-2005, 12:47 PM So, I'm nearing the refinement stage of my newest CG character, (a semi-realistic 50's B-movie space dude), and thought you guys might want to take a look.

always love to be the first to crit :p
looking good but theres a few things you could do to maybe spruce him up.
-areas such as the backside seem quite flat and contorted - maybe a few wireframe images would help point out some topology probs but the overall shape seems quite flat.
-his arms also seem to be suffering from a similar problem - again - wires would help
-His feet seem quite small - unless this is intentionally what your after, but I might suggest amplifying his back and upper body to exaggerate them - look at mr incredible for reference esp. if your going for a 1950's look
-Work on his hairstyle - possibly more slicked up to suit the hairstyles of that era?
-mouth seems quite strange - lacking in detail - he looks almost corpse-like in the face as a result - as if polys have simply been extruded inward?
-loving the design - the boots and collar suit him!
good start tho - would really like to see this developed more. You got a story/anim your wanting to do with him?

I was wondering whether anybody would crit this. Thanks.
Yeah, the backside is my main problem area. I tried for a 'stretched fabric' look which just didn't work quite right
I stupidly did this render with a perspective view, and is from a down angle. This is what makes the feet look small (I know they're not, since he wears the same size shoes as me and is my height, though I'm not exactly in that kind of shape! ;) )
I'll be using Maya Hair for the hair, so it'll be there about the time I start texturing.
I realized this weekend that his arms are about 3-4 inches too long, so that's in the works too.
I'll see about posting a few wireframes.

Oh I terrible for snouting around for the threads with zero replies :D
I'd just model the butt and use the texturing to get the creases in the material - keep it simple n all that :)
I'd consider trying an exaggerated upper body and smaller legs/feet to see how it looks rather than going for anatomically correct - try simplifying :D
looking forward to updates and any landscapes/environments your gonna place him in too!

I've been working on this, cleaning up a lot of geometry.

its looking good man - that image is a bit small but it does look quite smart. his proportions still seem a little off to me but maybe that 'thunderbirds puppet' look is what you want to achieve hehe! keep goin man - gonna keep me eye on this

For some reason I can't see the revised shots. So I'll comment on the first picture. Here's what I see.
Butt is way too flat, back and shoulders are VERY VERY broad, head might be a tad too big compared to the rest of the anatomy and the feet do look small.
Still a nice model though!

Yeah, for some reason, CGTalk isn't allowing me to post my images inline, or at least I can't see them, as far as I can tell, anyway. They certainly don't show for me.
Here's the direct link to the small version (http://sporadicenterprises.net/SE/downloads/Small4View.jpg) and a larger version (http://sporadicenterprises.net/SE/downloads/Large4View.jpg).
I decided that I wanted the geometry to be more stylized, so I've rebuilt large sections of anatomy, primarily the shoulders, abs, buttocks and legs.
The new pictures are orthographic, so hopefully the proportions are a bit easier to see.
I'm still trying to get a decent wireframe. My earlier attempts at anatomy made a lot of weird edge loops, and cleaning all that mess up has been taking quite awhile.

The new revision is looking much better. Good work. I'll will have to agree with anthonymcgrath about a quite a few things for critique. The feet are seeming fairly small, and I think this is more apparent mainly because the rest of him is fairly proportional relative to the rest of himself. Keep in mind that he is wearing boots too, so his feet would be even smaller underneath. See if that helps add some thought to approaching that.
I would say that his back is looking a bit stiff and flat. Maybe add a little more curvature to the spine. The body is a totem of counter balance, so if you're going for something more characteristic, this could be another area to play around with how it's emphasized.
The muscles are alot more soft and subtle than before, which I think is great, and much more realistically appealing. And the proportions seem alot more consistent. It's looking good. Keep it up.

Ok, a bunch of pics, and I think I've figured out how to get them to post inline. I realized after I rendered them that I'd forgotten to do a mesh smooth, so you can see the jaggyness in the ears and for the buttons and such, but still, they look pretty good, I think

For the most part, I've been doing a lot of little things. I remodelled the boots from the heal down, and did a bit of work on the back and buttocks. I still want to hit the upper lip, which looks really flat, and I'm still debating what to do about the back, because it is very flat. I may not worry about it, as the anim. I have planned doesn't ever see him from the back. ;) But I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so we'll see.
spyraux - One of the things I've been noticing looking at a lot of those old serials for reference is that the older action stars were not buff Schwartzenegger Godlike types. Heck, some of them had beer guts and love handles (Adam West? Ok, bad example...)! So, after making him buff, most of my time has been spent in softening him. Glad someone else approves.
