View Full Version : The Legionaire (My quick character design)
StylusMonkey 03-03-2005, 01:34 PM Just a fast character sketch for a prospective video game client, graphite pencil on paper + photoshop CS - part of a larger piece, an hour or so, no references.

Nice sketch!
But i dont get it what is going on with the upper arm.. Is it broken? That is very uncomfortable position to keep your arm. Also i dont follow the motion. What is that arm doing?
Looks like he is sort of pulling it backwards? What is he doing?
Also you might considering small abdomal steel plates of sort for him.
I like it anyway.

nice shading .....i see he is anticipating to throw the spear.....but this pose could be a little more extreme to give it more dynamic look...there is also a really sharp edge at the bottom left abdominal section....try to use the forms of the muscles as the guideline to know how your body will twist and the edge will form....
keep up the good work....;)

Ha, thanks, a lot of people have asked that, but this is just part of the sketch - behind and above him there is a guy who will be jumping down onto him with a sword ready to pierce his head, so he's quickly turning around and at the same time trying to get into position to throw the javelin.
Well, it's an interesting pose ... but highly impossible. The arm is just way out there and it does look broken or dislocated at the shoulder. There are other anatomy problems that you would probably benefit from looking at a few reference images. Don't know if you'll be able to find something with this type of pose, maybe you can get a friend to pose for you.
Major problems with this sketch Centerline of the pectorials and the abdomen are extremely off alignment. Draw a curve for the spine and work on the forms of the chest muscles from that point. It'll help keep things in place when the character is twisting the upper body. Ribs ... I count 3 distinct sets of ribs on this guy. Again, working off of a spinal curve box in the character's lungs (or basic shape of the rib cage) before you build up muscles over them. The neck muscles should stop at a point before the collar bone. This poor guy doesn't have a collar bone so I guess it makes some sense that his neck muscles extend to the center of his pectorals. The love handles - really wonky. I guess it's because of all those extra ribs and to make it even more odd ... he's only got it on one side of his body. There's minor problems too, but they really aren't that bad by comparison to the major issues. I'd use this as a starting point to a new illustration. It could be a very dynamic pose and an excellent element to the composition of a larger piece. However, the anatomy problems are really distracting in this image.
