fun stuff. but it needs alot of work. you need to work on your shader. lower the bump. the problem with most cg stuff is that the bump is to large. look around you, not alot of stuff is very bumpy. you also need to do something to better seperate the upper half, from his lower half. a better texture will help. great animaition can really bring this guy to life. great effort for your first project!
finally I must say that lens flares are the cheesiest and most overused effect in animation. get rid of it now!:D

Conceptually you are off to a good start. It's certainly an interesting model, although I'm not entirely sure what it is that I'm looking at. :D That kind of uniqueness is sometimes hard to find, though. Keep an eye on your shadow maps. If you can see jaggies like that try raising their resolution, or switching to raytraced. And, yes, the lense flare. They rarely compliment the work, and even then, they should be subtle. Good start, though.
