Hi,

I want to learn how to use renderman but I can't afford any of the renderman suite (RAT, SLIM, server etc...) I know the free or open source RIB complient renderers won't teach me most things about renderman but I just want to get used to rib file generation [in Maya] and other renderman-style procedures so I've got a slight grounding in Renderman.

hi,

I'd recommend you getting 3Delight as the renderer and LiquidMaya (Site @ SF (http://sourceforge.net/projects/liquidmaya/)) to do the RIB-generation from Maya. 3Delight seems to be the top-choice among the free Renderman-compliant renderers now (with Aqsis and Pixie not coming far behind tho). And in combination with LiquidMaya you can do and learn everything that you could do with Pixar's tools - just a lil different of course.
Hope that helped.

cheers
Chris

Excellent mate! Thanks a lot, that's exactly the sort of info I was after.

I was wondering how fast the rendering is in 3Delight?

What features does it not have over Mental Ray's? I know, I know... I haven't done my homework.
