ok i`m a lightwaver trying to get a grip on maya since that`s the app we use at school, and all i want to do is move the jaw up and down.i`ve already activated the bones and worked two days on the weightmaps but i seem to be one bone short in the jaw area and i`m told i cant make blendshapes after i`ve activated the bones (my character is one object, the head is not separate)

is there a way to animate the jaw anyways? add one more bone even if they`re activated

(hope this made any sense)

Insulting the app is probably not the best way to get help.

Unbind the model.

Sure, no problem. Go into the component editor and under skinCluster, set the hold value for all bones to "on". This will lock down your current weighting. Then add your new bone to the skinCluster node through the Skin->Edit Smooth Skin->Add Influence command. When you have added all the new bones you want, to back to your component editor and turn hold to off so you can add weighting to the newly added bones.

You should be able to add blendShapes after your character is skinned as well. Any newly created blendShapes will need to be evaluated before your skinning though, so after creating the blendShape you'll need to go to the toolbar item for incoming connections (the tooltip is "List of operations performed on the selected object"), and rearrange the blendshapes to be before the skinCluster.

Hope this helps,

I would highly suggest you spend some time reading the learning maya4 book, and think, and pay extra special attention to the part about the dependancy graph.

Of course you can add blendshapes after your model has been bound. You can also toss another bone in there.

Try ..Learning Maya " Character rigging and Animation "
...no offence!!!

There is no easier app in bone structure and binding than Maya !!!!

there is an app that does bones much easier. i wont go as far as the thread poster did. but the bones in maya arent exactly on the cutting edge side either. the good thing though is that you have many tools around the bones to do stuff with them. but bones themselves are lacking.

:) Maybe i should add..."....for me and the way i want to work"

...by the way ...just from curiosity, which app is the coolest in bones and character rigging? :wavey:

...Maybe u mean Mirai ( personally i have no clue about it!!!)

Maybe i am turning this thread to a personal conversation!!!..sorry!!!

the problem with that quote is that you say the way you want to work. but if you havent explored how other apps do it how can you be so sure :) maybe theres something that clicks even more.

and yup i meant mirai:) the problem with mirai though is that your setups cant get as complex as in maya. ( skinning i mean )
thats what you get when its not updated for years.

:wavey: U know basically i have worked years with Max and then i went to maya and Lightwave ....i really can't search every 3D app there is out there, if i want to be good at one or maybe two of them.(Although i am very fascinated of them , how they evolve in years, i mean..!)

Hey ...we can talk for these things for hours...!!!..but better not in this thread

Anyway ...cheers!!!:p
