View Full Version : installing 3dsmax 7 trail version
gaiXyn 03-03-2005, 05:04 AM hi, I know you guys might be thinking "here we go again, another newbie with a stupid question" well, even tho for some of you it might be true I hope that someone will help me. I've downloaded the free trail from Discreet's web site to give it a try, but when I try to install it, this is what comes up in one of those lil error boxes, you know that one I'm talking about, just imagine that everything in the " " is in a dialog box.
"Error 1305. Error reading from file:
C:\DOCUME~1\DONALD~1\LOCALS~\Temp\WZS26.tmp\3d
smax.msi. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.
Retry Cancel"
when I click the retry button, the box just pops up again saying the same thing, I don't think I'm missing any files, ( tho I could be wrong ) I clicked the link Discreet sent and downloaded the file. Does anyone know what's going on, or perhaps someone has run into this problem before and knows how to fix it.
thx -

Looks like it's the installer file. Maybe it's been damaged somehow, try to dowload it again and see if it pops up again.
Good luck,

sounds like you opened it directly instead of downloading it to a place on disc first en then opening it (judging from the directory path noted in the error]??
if so, try saving it to disc 1st.

Are you running any realtime virus scanners? If so try disabling them as they can cause issues with various installers including 3dsmax. Also are you downloading the install dirsctly from discreet's website? If not I would suggest getting it from there.
Hope this helps,

hi, well I'm not running any realtime virus scanners, and the way I got the link to d/load the file is via email. They ask for some information name, phone # including email, then when I was done, discreet sent me the link to d/load the program. I guess I won't be able to try it out after all.

That kind of problem already happened to me with some programs after I optimized my system. To speed up the file system I had turned off the creation of 8.3 names (standard dos names) and when I tried to install some program using a web installer it couldn't find his "babies". So, basically, if you happen to have done the same, you might want to activate "create 8.3 name (or something like that) back :)
Other thing you can try is after you downloaded the big file from internet, unzipping it using winrar or winzip (most web installer can be unzipped). Sometimes it helps

LOL!!! amazing!!, thank you so much Abraham, unzipping using winrar did the trick, I knew once I found someone that had the same problem I had, that they'll be able to solve mine. Thanks a million man!!

Heh, always unzip your files before installing them. :)
The thing is that if you open a file inside a zip file then only that file gets unzipped and run while the rest of the files are still neatly tucked inside the zip. That would also explain the temp directory Yves mentioned.

yes very true, but in most cases ( I now realize this isn't so anymore ) when you double click a zipped file, it'll automatically open your unzipping program. Be it, winzip or winrar, but instead, this thing asked if I wanted to setup and install 3dsmax 7, so I thought it'll do all the unzipping and the installation on it's own. Didn't think I'll have to, in a way, "force" it to unzip. Well, @ least I know now.
