View Full Version : Rain scene - WIP
ThreeDeityMike 03-03-2005, 02:38 AM Hey everyone! In the short amount of time that I've been part of this forum, I've seen so much incredible work that I'm inspired to try something out myself. In the last year or so, everything I have done has been for my reel, and it has been mostly animation inspired. I really want to switch gears and start working on modeling and just making a really decent composition.
I know exactly what I want to go for, but with some things I'm rusty, and with other things, I'm just not knowledgable! I'm not really sure how I'm going to do what I'm aiming for, but oh well. How can anyone get better without aiming high and working at it?!
I have a character that I made last year and he's really only appeared on a white background. I'd like to put him in a scene with lots of rain and dark clouds. He'll be holding a jar of fire flies that will give him a source of light.

Here's a quick sketch of my basic idea, and the character I'll be using.
I'm open to any good ideas, critiques and technical help!!

I really like the eyes. You did a good job with these in how they can convey emotion.
The only problem I can see is that the skin looks like sculpey. I don't know if its because there is no texture other than geometry (any bump maps?) or if its the purple/blue splotch skin. You want to keep this cartoony/stylistic, but I would add somethin to make it look just alittle bit more lifelike. Keep it up, lookin great.

I agree Oculus. He does look alot like Sculpey. Admittedly, I'm not great at texturing and not very confident at all. When I modeled him last year, I knew that I couldn't texture him realistically, so I went for a more cartoony look. He could have some more detail with the textures, but for this project - I'll probably focus on the rest of the scene and not the character so much. But when this project is done, I think I need to start modeling more characters!
Then again, maybe I will try some more things with him. I'm just not sure, but I do agree! :)

Here's a building that will be in the background. I'm not sure if I'll have one or two buildings, or how close or far away they will be. I figure if I have the whole building so I can use it later on down the road.

there are some obvious little problems like how the building seems to sink into the sidewalk, and the fire hydrant is a little large. That will all be fixed. - just a thoughtless render :)

I must admit that i like your style. Not many people go for the cartoony look but I personally like it. Keep us updated.
Great colors and nice modeling. I like your style very much

That's looking pretty slick. Be sure to dirty it up a bit, especially if it's going to be stormy.
