View Full Version : Technique for "making a hole" in Maya?
PeaceOfMind 09-19-2002, 09:27 AM Hey,
Can someone tell me how to make a clean "hole" in an object using cps tools and/or polygons? In nurbs might be helpful too...
I just need to make the leg holes in a pair of diapers, thanks for your time.
Oh and its in Maya.

best way in any of the techniques, with most control would be to just delete the geometery where you want the hole and then build some going up into the inside. Example, poly's... delete the faces were you want the holes, then grab your edges around the new hole and extrude the edges up inside the diaper.

theres a really cool plugin called polysew for lightwave, maya might have something similar. you can get polysew off flay.com. alternatively you can delete 2 faces and manually make polys if your using subd

Look Trimming up in your manual or the Maya online help. That is exactly what you're looking for

As far as I'm aware, trimming does not work on polygonal surfaces.

That's right but PeaceOfMind also asked how it's done on NURBS.

Neil --Try doing booleans
268 posts.... and you haven't read here that booleans are the worst thing to do in MAYA?
457 (Or something) posts, and I can't see what's wrong with Maya booleans? :)
Seriosly, I think it works perfectly with everything relatively simple (I can't say for sure how it works with some more complex models, as I haven't tested it that much), can you show me an example of how/where it DOESN'T work?
Oh and I'm not flaming you or anything, I'm just asking

Okay I understand why you may want to know the answer to this question. So I gave you a quick tutorial, illustration.
pic1) I made two similar cubes, with 3 subs per side.
pic2) I insert a cylider into one of them to boolean(see pic3).
pic4) The other cube I delete the center faces and then move the verts into a circular pattern, also use Append to Poly tool to make new faces inside the hole to attach the top and bottom.(pic5)
As you can see in Pic3, the highlighted area, is still a complete face that maya has created. But the boolean area is not visable. The biggest problem comes in pic6 ( the smoothing ) and pic7 (the close up) Maya cant compute the smoothing of the boolean face properly, so it doesn't do it at all.
But also look at the inside of the hole (pic7) the geometry on the inside of the hole is twice as dense as the cube faces already. Now you are getting to see the nightmanre of the boolean.
When I mean they dont work, they do, but they are a pain in the neck to rebuild from that point.
You would be better off in the long run making the hole by hand, because you can keep better track of your geometry that way. This applies to NURBs as well, but NURBs can use fillets and other tools to hide the bad boolean process.

Well true, they usually need some work done to 'em before the work is perfect, but booleans do work :p
Btw, does other programs have better booleans that solve that problem too?

They do work, but you are still better off making your own holes in things. I hope the picture was helpful.
One of my teachers told me that Rhino is the best program for making a car model in, mainly because the boolean tool there is extremely accurate. Other than that, I dont know about other programs that do as good of a job.
