did one of you guys manage to get rendering of high fur counts (200000) working in mental ray for maya?
i always get crashes when i try to render.
first it gathers a lot of memory (around 1 gig) and then kills maya.
it can't be a memory problem. i have 2 gigs in my system.
i also tried the rapid mode.

did you try to adjust the BSP settings?

if i remember right, you should use the rapid scanline option in render globas... dunno if it was for fur or motion blur though

also tune your BSP settings, and lower the max RAM usage setting under BSP settings

an idea for a workaround:

add some dynamic attributes to your scene to batch render tiles.

this is one way i was able to render very big images tile by tile and it didnt cause my system to crash, although there were about 2 mio. polys, soft shadows with many rays, a.s.o.

look for a thread, something with "big render ... mental ray" or something like that. if this does not help you, just reply, tonight i could give you the information how to use render tiles in batch with mr (didnt work until using these dynamic attributes, although when typing in cmd:
V:\...\>render -r mr -help
or
V:\...\>mayatomr -help

you get the information that flag -rr an -rg work with mr. it does not!

look for the thread i was talking about. good luck - ill come back to this tonight. no time.

regards, david

sorry that it took until today, but heres the link i was talking about. saved my life...

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=171211

search string: render big images mental ray

important lines: Quote:

here's a secret attribute for render region:
create some dynamic attributes (integers) in the 'node
mentalrayGlobals' and name them:
regionRectX
regionRectY
regionRectWidth
regionRectHeight
they will work in the interactive rendering.

read through and you are able to render every size.

good luck,

david

p.s. just saw that you found it.
by the way, anywhere in the internet i found a document (i think on alias page) about best bsp setting (paolo berto i think...)

had the problem with more than 200000 hairs in mental ray too. Switched than to maya software rendering for the fur and got a good look.

One week ago I activated in the boot.ini the 3GB option in windows xp and tried again the mental ray rendering with 400000 hairs. Worked. No crashing.
But I go on with maya software. To get a smooth look in mental ray for the fur I had to increase the samples and got much too long rendertimes.
