View Full Version : sharpness loss
ramiro 03-02-2005, 08:14 PM no matter if i work with interlaced or progressive footage, if i move it in any axis(merge, transform, tracker path etc), it always loses some of its sharpness. why is that?

Hi Ramiro,
Make sure you're in Hi-Q mode, you're viewer is at 100%, and you're viewing square pixels.

Some image loss is going to occur with any subpixel transformation. Fusion 4 has added concatenated transform support, to minimize this softening over succesive transforms. However, this data concatenation can be broken by placing any other nontransform tool between them (ie a paint).
The next best option if you aren't animating the transform at all, is to enter values that are full pixel offsets, which can be figured out by taking 1 and deviding it by the resolution of the image in either the x or y axis. (ie a ntsc image of 720x486 would be a picel value of 0.00138888 in x, and 0.00205 in y. Just multiply these values by the number of pixels you want to move the image. )

Also, the arrow keys will move an image 1 pixel. Shift+arrow=10 pixels. Ctrl+arrow=1/10 pixel. For those afraid of math ;)

thanks for the replies. unfortunately im working in non-square projects(its always 16x9). lets say that in merges i try to limit it to 1 pixel offsets. but what happens with tracking? yesterday i had to stabilise a shot and its blurred a bit. there is no way to constrain it, is there?
talking about stabilising, how can i limit it to either the x or the y axis only?

Hi Ramiro,
When I mentioned square pixels I was refering to the 1:1 pixel aspect on DF's viewers for proper display on computer monitors.
To prevent a stabilized shot from blurring try to minimize the 'jitter' in your track path. You could try increasing the frames per path point or reducing the sub-pixel accuracy. De-interlacing footage before tracking can remove field jitter and improve a trackers accuracy.
As far as limiting a trackers axis, you can use an expression. For instance (assuming a single tracker) on a Xf Center select modify with expression. Then on the expression modifier connect Point In 1 to your tracker. Then on the Point Out tab put in p1x or p1y as needed.
Hope this helps,
Eric
