Hi all,

I am in the process creating a 3d castle and a sports car in 3dsmax.

The problem is, i can never make anything look real and as good as you guys and gals can. Why is that?

What i want the car to look like.....

I want the car to look really shiny and real and make the tires look real too. How is this usually done. Do i have to take a picture of a real car and map it on? do i have to paint it? and also for the tires do i have to model the the treadmarks individually or is this usually dont via mapping.

What i want the castle to look like....

I want in to look like it is built of individual bricks all put together. Do i have to model each brick and build the castle block-by-block? or do i just put a texture on it?

I am really clueless when it comes to making something look real.

I really just want to know how it is usually done and how.

I hope i dont sound too silly but Please please do try and help me .

Take care and thank you all!!

John

browse around in cgtalk for some good metalic car shader tutorials. I am not really good at this. Sorry for not able to help.

Well...
According to the castle I think you should try to find a nice block texture with a good bump...I think that's much better than block-by-block modeling.
Unfortunately I can't help you with the car very much because I have the same problems you have with my car model...I'm also trying to make it look real, specially with the car paint.

If you are using max6 or later then you can take advantage of the great displacement ability of the built in mental ray renderer to create your castle stones. You build a single object like a wall and then add the displacement map to create the individual bricks. That'll get you great geometry to build a nice texture upon. Do a search in the max help files for regular max displacement, and mental ray displacement.
