View Full Version : Still Life: Ravaged World Surface
JohnD 09-19-2002, 06:31 AM Hey all. Here is a backdrop I'm using for my flic. I'm going for the traditional "watercolor" background image usually used in older cell animations. Any opinions?

I think it looks just great, shows a lot of character which is oftem lost on backgrounds...
nice style. But I think those fractal surfaces in the background are unrealistic and have the usual-boring CG trademark on them.
Some complexity , shattered rock or struggling vegetation would definitely add more personality to the scene and fit the modeling with the rendering style.

Thanks for the comments everyone. M@, would you believe that there are actually no fractal noise textures in the surface? Used photographs of rocks and dirt. But I agree with you and I'll play around to see if I can get rid of that fractal noise look.

Looks great! if it hadn't been presented in here, i would have just considered it a real pic. Nice job.

Thanks Matt. Great thing about Lightwave's renderer is that u can get very nice results with almost no setup. Basically only one light in this scene with radiosity and a tad bit of ambient light.
no, you misundertood me. Your texture is cool...I was speaking of the modelling.
I think those smoothly peaking rocks (or whatever) are unnatural (not the foremost , that one looks nice); too smooth and fractal-noise style. You see what I mean?

Hey thanks Pegasus. I just love the old Don Bluth films...the awesome watercolor backdrops they had "Secret of NIMH" sticks out in my head. Trying to capture the same feeling.

As an alienesqe landscape I love it, both the form of the terrain and the texturing, it looks like a cold damp desolate alien world. :bounce:
