View Full Version : Render Format Confusion

Hi, I've been trying to render a final project for school, and I am a bit confused about what resolution and aspect ratios to use for DVD format. From what I am aware of I should use a resolution of 720x486 and a pixel aspect ratio of 0.9 for full screen or 1.2 for wide screen. Now there are just a couple things that confuse me about this. First off, I'm rendering targa images with Maya 6 and I am using Premiere Pro 1.5 to compile the images. When I start a new project with Premiere it shows the default widescreen and standard resolutions as being 720x480. Why is this, when I have rendered my images at 720x486? Should I have rendered at 720x480? What does the 6 pixel difference mean? Or should I just create a custom project with the 720x486 resolution? My final project will be viewed on a standard 4:3 television so is there some kind of letterboxing technique that I should use in Premiere if I want a 16:9 widescreen look? Or will the tv or dvd player automatically add the black bars on top and bottom? Also, when I render my project with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.2 and import the targas into Premiere, it detects the pixel aspect ratio being 0.9. I can change it to 1.2 in Premiere, but will I lose any picture quality by doing so? Any help or answers to any of my questions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jerm.

In terms of wether or not the image get stretched by the tv really depends on the tv!
If the picture is to wide to be showed 1:1 on a 4:3 tv in fullscreen then the tv will automatically add the blacks on top and bottom, but most tv's today have a viewmode select so you can adjust it yourself ;)

Regarding the the other problem im sorry but i dont really know :\
