Hey chaps!

I am now going through Jason Ospia's book, (using XSI), and need some help with the expressions.

I have looked, but can't find any info on taking the expressions over to XSI.
If there's any help or links you can give me I would greatly appreciate it! As I imgagine many others have done the setup in XSI!

Cheers chaps! Rich :)

the expression are almost exact. except for clamping. its been i while i forget without having my scene up. but you just READ the book. and apply the same concepts to XSI.
it can be done all you need is the book

The expressions are all exactly the same, just pull points until your model looks the way you think the expression should.
Once this is finished, XSI uses Shape Models through the Animation menu. Shape>Select Shape.

If this doesn't work, just take note of the several settings that the 'Shape' menu offers.
You need 'Object Relative Mode' and 'Apply Selected Shape' Keys to be turned on.

The bump maps can be linked via the 'Link With...' command. Once that's done you can set relative keyframes.

The rig that Osipa creates can be done as well and built just as he has it in his book.
Keep in mind that with XSI's features though, and the Linking specifically, you can rig an entire face without writing a single line of code.

On with the show!....

It's not that hard to figure out the expressions actually, and I prefer them over link withs because it means xsi doesn't have to deal with an extra f-curve, plus setting them up is a pain (just hate those drop-down boxes) - I'll try to post something up tonight if I have time...

Hey Chris,

not meaning to be secretive about the whole thing, I've just written a short tutorial and wanted some feedback before putting it out at large. But hey, if you want to check it out and give me some feedback you're more than welcome :)

matt ... that tutorial is great!!
i even managed it to find out the expressions for l_sad and r_sad :p
the image to weightmap technique is also great ... i better not tell you how i used to make asymmetrical shapes :D

working with expressions seems indeed to be better since you can copy/paste the expressions instead of climbing through the explorer until you reached the local transform value of the null and setting relational keys ...

so i guess it's time to make a tutorial section on your homepage :)

Pilchard has given me a few suggestions so am going to polish it up a little this weekend and give it a proper section all of it's very own :)

Right, got the hang of the interface setup and am fiddling with the weightmap section.

In section 3 though, i make the weightmap, and run the script, selecting the image and freeze the ImagetoWM operator.

Then I make a new Weightmap and repeat the procedure, but choosing the oppoiste weight map image, however the ImagetoWM operator applies to the original weightmap again rather than the newer one?

Probably something simple I'm missing??

Thanks guys :)

If you have the two weightmaps set up the ImagetoWeightmap interface should have a drop-down allowing you to change the weightmap cluster it is applied to...

Sorted! :)

Also I have noticed that when selecting the weight maps for each shape, it only works if I select the shapes from the base object's cluser section. If I select the shape from the mixer-source-shapes in the explorer it does not work for some reason.

Got it all working now anyways, phwew. How people manage with the ammount of shapes gollum had is amazing, hehe!

On with the show....

Many thanks! :)
