Still very new to this, so not sure if this is a matte or composit or what to call it. Came from a base sketch and then used hq digital photographs taken by me, and some photoshop painting.

First ever attempt at something like this.

Entering my first quarter at the Art Institute of Portland next month.

I know the detail and quality are not there, so even though I consider this finished, I post it in the WIP for some critique and comment. Hopefully the critique comes in the form of suggestions and maybe even a little instruction.

I know the distant rock formations are to sharp, but I was not getting the distance blur I wanted, any suggestions?

I don't know exactly what to say to help you out all that much. But it looks nifty. I'd work on the rocks in the background. Both in shadow and texture.

Was this photo taken in Bandon? 'Cos... it looks like Bandon. I guess it could be Reedsport, though. I guess I'm not very well versed on the Oregon coastline. (I'm from Oregon, though.)

It looks pretty nice to me. There are a few problem areas, but they seem like they could be taken care of pretty easily.

The rocks do look too sharp. Try putting a shadow on the inside of the arch. One good way to make it seem like the rocks are fading into the distance is to slightly blur them and then put some layers over them set at very low opacity that are filled with blue. If you're using Photoshop, take each rock layer and put a new layer above it. Fill the new layers with light blue and then lower the opacity to something like 5%. You can erase the parts of the blue that you don't want.
The water hitting the cliff on the left side of image doesn't look quite "there" yet. Perhaps you should go take pictures of beaches from an angle close to the angle of the cliff and then composite.
The top of the cliff looks very odd. Try getting some pictures of fog coming over hills and put it there.
Good luck!

gunslinger: photos used were from all up and down the coast, most of them had to be extended to fit within the sketch I made. Foreground is mostly from Gearhart on the Northern Coast. Some of the wet sand line is from cannon beach and rockaway. Some of the rock also from cannon beach and further south to devil's punch bowl and otter rock.

Nothing came from Bandon, although Bandon is just about my favorite spot on the coast. Need to get down there again and photo some of the very cool rock formations soon.

swizzle stick: thanks for the comments and help, will work on it as soon as get some more time, glad I saved a million times during the creation process so I can go back a ways and tweak things.
I actually used a great pic of a cloud coming over the distant mountain, but I think I lost the clarity when using the patch and clone tools for texture and edge clean up.

The horizon is very abrupt. The waves should follow the perspective more - I mean their perceived size should diminish more towards the horizon. Also some more aerial perspective on the rocks would help - look at the grass on that hill, and look at how it's colour changes the further away it is from the viewer. Now the grass on the rocks is too bright and yellow to be that far away. Also you've got some blurriness over the hill that doesn't really help sell the image.

Just many small things really, with a little work this will look quite nice.

Okay, taking in the suggestions, and trying some new things. Here is the result.
