View Full Version : THE COMIC STRIP! : John Grieve 2005 : Operation Hairball
Cut-Me-Own-Throat-Dibbler 03-01-2005, 08:39 PM Here are some of my ideas. Forgive my poor grammar.
"Operation Hairball"
A Dog with remarkable feline insight, a neurotic cat that thinks its a canary and a 60 a day alchoholic rat with a tendancy to sulk. An unlikely alliance brought together to rid the world of a demonic army of rabid zombies. But wait! these arent just any demonic rabid zombies. This army which is terrorising the world leaving a trail of definately dead people consists entirely of cats. And there little glowing yellow eyes are fixed firmly ,on global domination.....
March the 1st 2005 at 'Bobs Life Sciences' was the same as pretty much any other day. March the 2nd 2005 however signalled the begining of the end for all of mankind, and pretty much everybody else for that matter . And so it began... in the stationary cupboard.
some character concepts:
Pyrex:
Since being fitted with a cats eye after losing his old one in an umbrella fight,
Pyrex has lived at Bobs Life Sciences as an unofficial guinea pig for mind altering
drugs. Pyrex is natural born leader, he shirks his responsibilities easily and makes sure his own ass is covered first in a crisis. Due to his special eye he can tell what a cat is thinking from 100 yards.

Polly:
'A cat!!', I hear you gasp ,'WTF's A cat doing in this 'dream team''. Well this little pussy proved immune to 'Feline Pacifier Type B*' due to her mixed parentage. Bred at Bobs Life Sciences she is part cat but also part Canary, allowing her the unique advantage of being able to detect gas, 9 times.

Lugs:
Smokes, Drinks, Swears and generally sulks. The stereotypical rat you may proclaim, but is there more to this rat than meets the eye?. The cause of the 'Feline Pacifier type B*' Disaster and a thorn in the side of our heroic duo, could this little guy be harbouring a sinister secret?

I plan on tidying this up and adding a title , but im off to Ireland tomorrow so wanted to post it for some crits:

Wow thanks a lot, I didnt expect such a fast and optimistic response. Please can you tell me in what way Pyrex's mouth looks odd coCoKNIght, is it in the main strip or overall?

na, it's just that behind the darkest spot on the mouth is... like... something missing, maybe a brown line would do, dunno... I'm not good at explaining such things in english... If you still don't understand request a paintower :scream:
Anyway, it's nothing that must be changed, it's awesome nonetheless! :)

I think I know what you mean , there was a line but its kind of been lost in the darkness. Im hoping to clean it up a bit when I get back. Thanks for the comments

Good idea addressing Lugs' "sins of the past" early on. You don't want to let these things fester. :) Nice work. Looking forward to more comicky goodness.

thanks anim_ziggy, has anyone got any crits so far. Anything grating on folks nerves? (apart from me) or needing drastically changed? I know the colouring is a bit below par but ive been trying to keep to a tight time scale as I dont have a lot of it usually.

I'm sorry , but I can't warm up to Pyrex. Don't know if it's cuz his face is so angular or that he's so BROWN. I know I'm being superficial, but with his sunken eyes and square jowls he looks just as evil and half dead as the cat zombies he's sworn to fight. What if he had a lighter color muzzle and droopier jowls like (I think) Old Reliable from Lady and the Tramp. And what if he had a buff colored cocker spaniel sidekick that looked like Sarah Michelle Gellar?
I was kidding about the buffy spaniel, but you might consider introduce a female character at some time.
I forgot about the single fang -- it's too long to be a normal dog's tooth and makes me wonder what happened to its mate and how he lost it. I'd say matching teeth or none (visible) at all.
Nice job, and I'm jealous of your page rate (you're keeping on schedule). Excuse my English, it's my native language. :D

Thanks Ilikesoup,
I think I will ditch the fang it was anoying me a bit. My intention is to have him looking battle scarred and tired but maybe ive overdone it a touch, ill perhaps look at revising his looks.
Polly is meant to be his female sidekick but ive not really gone into her personality yet.

I personally like the fang. It's perhaps, not that clear when he talks but I find it very cute being there. It gives him more personality! The only thing that I didn't realise is that Polly is a female cat, maybe you should change her looks a bit!

John-
several comments...
1) I LOVE THIS STRIP!
2) definately loose the fang - its too much like Bucky Katt in "Get Fuzzy" and while I LOVE Bucky, you want yours to be original
3) The zombies need to be instantly recognizable & completely different looking from other characters. The last post there is a yellow zombie cat that at first I thought was Polly. Maybe all the zombies are in shades of gray, but other characters have color?
4) the zombie cats actually look kind of like schnauzers because of the big moustaches - they ARE cats, right?
5) I'm a touch worried about whether or not the back story is too complicated if you attempt at some point to syndicate this.
Keep it going and I'm sure you will continue to refine and work out all the details. REALLY GREAT WORK!!

Thanks Robinayles your advice is much appreciated. Ive ditched the fang on the latest strip but I see what you mean about the zombies ,the yellow one could be easily confused. I may take onboard your idea about them all being gray, it would make them look a bit more dead as well.
Ive maybe gone a bit heavy on the facial hair but they are definatly cats :) ill tone it done next strip. As for the story, I had originally intended to do it in the form of a comic book but time constraints made it easier to fire off short strips now and again, I like the idea behind it but was trying to introduce elements gradually.
I dont see this going anywhere outside CGTalk , its just an excuse for me to practice and try and improve and its crits like yours that help me do that ,Thanks!

Quite the awesome comic you 'ave there. Some good jokes and I like the aesthetic. Having Pyrex wear one of those green plastic visors at one point was a nice touch.
In fact, I kinda prefer the darker, mangier Pyrex to the current itteration. He had a 'competent miliatry sergent' feel to him. Plus, it was unique. Not a lot of stories focus on the less-handsome character. The newer version makes him look fresh out of the pet store almost.
By the way, I loved Part 4. Best one yet.
Keep it up, dude
