View Full Version : Pai Mei from Kill Bill 2
mark-jenkins 03-01-2005, 08:11 AM This is the first time I have posted any work on this forum, but I have been inspired by the work and words of encouragement I have seen, so here goes...
This is my initial sketch of the character Pai Mei, from Kill Bill 2. I intend to add a background and paint in photoshop, but would appreciate any crits or advise at this stage.
Thanks

I like the folds at the arms, very lifelike.

This is my first painting from scratch in photoshop using a wacom tablet. I have spent a couple of weeks working on this in my spare time. I have got to the stage now where I am a little sick of this image and need to leave it alone for a while. There are many things I can see wrong with it but I would appreciate your comments. I have learned alot in the process of working on this image, but now feel it is time to leave it for a while. Maybe I will come back to it at a later date when I have improved my painting skills!

Looking really good man, got nothing to crit on the painting, but i have one thing regarding the sword: it's been a while since I saw Kill Bill2, but I don't remember him using swords, in your painting he's holding a japanese sword and if i remember correctly Pai Mei hated everything that was japanese. I could be totally wrong here and it doesn't matter at all, but that just came to my mind:D

^^^ I was just thinking that myself! Like you said, not a big deal for this work.
I must say that you've got a great style for someone just starting with Photoshop. Looking at the thumbnail you had there colored I figured at first that you must be posting your reference photo! When I clicked it, I could tell that it was your painting so I must say you have the atmospheric colors pegged for the scene. Bravo!
Only think I can really crit is you might develop the light source a bit more. You have a strong shadow under him but to me everything else in the picture makes me think the day is overcast.
Good work, keep it up!

Rudeone is right pai mei dispised the japanesee and hated them.....he would be using a straight kung fu sword.....though this is almost irelevant

I like the flow of his clothing, especially on his left leg and you've given it the sheen of silk. His right leg looks a bit off, though. It looks shorter than his left and the knee should be moved forward a bit, both for balance and leverage if he thrusts forward. I've never seen the films, but I studied kung fu for a year. :) Otherwise, a great job. I thought the thumbnail was a reference photo, too.

I'd agree that there is something up with the right leg, might just be the angle though.
Regarding the sword, previous posters are right, based on the movie he would probably have a Chinese sword of some kind rather than the very japanese looking one you've given him. If it's supposed to be a katana-type weapon, the grip would likely be bigger as well.
That's just me nitpicking though ( seen that film too many times..:D ), as a whole it's coming along well.

In my opinion his pose does not look stable. Looks like he will fall on his back.

Thanks guys for all your comments,
As I have already said I have become a bit bored of this image but now I feel I have to addredd the issues that you have all raised. The first of which being "that sword" I know that most of you said it is not important but the fact that so many of you pointed it out tells me that this is a verty important detail of the character to get wrong! I will also try to make the lighting more realistic and take a look at that right leg.
Thanks
