i'd like to try to transfer into RISD (both for it's education quality, as well as location.... i'm currently at CU Boulder, and i am homesick for the eastcoast). I think a good demo reel would be crucial for my application, so i'm preparing to start on one (transfer applications aren't due until April, i believe).

just wondering if a demo reel is as important as i like to think it is. i know grades are also important, so i wont stop studying

here's a brief outline of what i intend to:

1) (opening) eagle flying through a canyon
2) (composition/motion tracking) live-action person smoking a cg cigarette
3) (face animation) facial animation on natalie model
4) (walk animation) walk cycle for quadroped creature
5) (walk animation/lighting) zombie or mummy walking through dark, moody hallway
6) (composition/particles) live-action person playing with cg fire

i think this is quite a varied selection, because it deals with texturing, modeling, animation and lighting, as well as composition. do you think this is a good mix?

If you are making a demo reel for an education firm I think you hit the nail on the head. For the walk cycle animation, you dont have to do a quadraped. If you can make a realistic, humanoid walk cycle, it looks better. Multilegged fantasy creatures are easier to get away with, you can make up some of your own rules. But hell, I say go for it, (1) keep the entire reel down to a couple of minutes, (2) dont linger on any one thing too long (3)and put your best stuff first. You can also submit a printed copy with little pictures that will actually giva all the details of your work. You don't have to make them read it on the screen.

Good Luck!!! You have good skills from what Ive seen, should be a shoe in
