I wanted to model a real person the other day (only cartoon stuff at work) and thought that myself would be the best reference I could ever get, so I ended up building my own face. And since I'm a big fan of Street Fighter 3, I found it funny to put my face on the character Yun. No, I don't have that body... yet ;)

I've been working on him on and off in my spare time for way too long already. I wanted to finish him last weekend, but noticed that the facial expressions need more preparation than planned, so I thought I'd show it to you guys and get some critiques before I get myself ready to face that chunk of work next week, presumably.

The character has 4770 triangles (yeah, I know... could be less...) and a 1024x1024 texture, completely hand-painted, done with max 6 and Photoshop.

These are the original artworks from the game, found at http://www.newwavemugen.com/~zweifuss/

This is what I have done

Critiques more than welcome. Thanks.

Wow! Not much to say about this one 'cept that I like it a lot! You really captured the character well and I'm glad you decided to handpaint the texture, seems like usually when people model themselves they just slap on a photo. Good job! :thumbsup:

Really good. I especially like the amount of work you put into the wrinkles on the clothing.

Also good to see a Shaolin Soccer (i think) quote in the signature.

Great work! One crit would be that your face color is lighter than the rest of your skin, fading visibly from one shade to the other around the jaw line. Also, it's not immediately obvious that you're wearing forearm guards - at first I thought I was looking at more discolored skin. Define the edges a bit more, add folds & creases, or make them darker. :shrug:

Otherwise, that's an awesome model. Very accurate face too!

lostinface - this character is from the game street fighter, and in the game, he wears it like wanzai made it. just in case you didn't know. personally, i like it facing front better, seeing as in the game, the brim is pretty exaggerated in their version. but that's just me.

wanzai - excellent job! it looks great.
my only suggestion is maybe adding some more detail to him, only to show off your skills. like the textures are awesome & all, and he's perfectly fine as-is. but the way the character was designed for the 2d, he's simple in that they have to draw out each frame & too much detail would have bogged them down. maybe toy with some things like light embroidering or something on his top, like traditional chinese clothes, or maybe something on his shoes to make them a little bit more sporty looking.
heck maybe even toying with other sorts of maps like diffuse & specular would lead to a nice effect, giving a silky look, you know? hope this makes sense. it's a little hard to describe.
but it looks good. just making suggestions, take it or leave it. i really like this & i like the whole 'cosplay' aspect too lol great job!

Frickin outstanding work - the edgeloops and topology is amazing - im saving these pics as reference!

Great textures too - did you paint the face yourself or is it a photo?.
Except for the slightly long feet, i have no negative things to say!

There you go Taiwan Dude :)

I like it alot. Good meshflow, good use if texture space.

I have 3 veeery minor complaints though:

The first thing i recognized was that the face texture looks paler than the rest of the skin on the body. The second one is more or less a question of personal preferences but i would have done the whole skin an bit more reddish. And las but not least: The glasses are missing man.

But as i said before. Great Work. As usual Hehe.

I wouldn't worry bout your poly count, especially when its a character from a fighting game, I'd up the count, but you did a great job, and your pose renders turned out really nice. The overall ambient lighting is really good, and shows off a lot of the character without dramatizing the scene or dulling it. kudos, and do Guile next. ;)

yea I was aware. Just thought it was cooler backwards as my preference . Though it looks great the way it is.

I think I saw this on SRK, (looking now haha) but man you are very talented. This is obviously more of a fighting game/action model since it's count is so high, but your texturing seems top notch.

ya, guess it was on SRK!! =) cool. I see you replied to my question as far as what do you do. Now I gotta ask..u say u get paid but is this like freelance work or what's up?? ^^

very nice, only crit is that i wish the pants had more of a sheen to them, really make em pop out, but very nice execution. This should be a game character competition, to mix yourself and a video game character. Nice work again.

Thanks for the comments! I'll try to incorporate the advices next time I work on him.

@Andy-H
Yes, the face is completely hand-painted, just like the rest. Of course, I used live ;) and a lot of photo references.

@ChewFunka
Yes, it's a Shaolin Soccer quote. Seen Kung-Fu Hustle yet?

Wow! Great likeness. You should work for EA(if you don't already do). They came to my school recently and the only thing they cared about for a demo reel was that you could model people's likeness acurately. I think you've modeled yourself spot on! Great job! I love it.

Hey, great model and excellent mesh flow but damn, his arms seem to have shrunk bigtime from the concept...? I think He could really benifit from some larger shoulders and triceps in particular.

Thanks all for the kind words :)

@dmonk
Yes, there will be updates, I should be able to get to him some time next week.

@SammyB
Since my rendition of Yun is rather realistic, I would find beefier arms too exaggerated - actually, seeing myself in that sporty body is already weird for me :rolleyes: If I was creating him for a 3D Street Fighter (crappy games btw), then yes, the proportions should be more punchy.

very nice textures and model!

the ONLY thing i would say is to bring the hat down more. i wear my hat like he does [over my eyes] and the hat almost touches the top of my ears [where my ears connect to my head]. looks like the hat is floating on top of his head.

can't wait to see him animated!
