View Full Version : Yet another Female...my first
minh_tran12_0 02-28-2005, 10:11 PM Hey, I started posting some really really really crappy wip's here, and got some pointers from a few people, after two weeks of tutorials, and a few things, here's what i've come up with so far... no refrence images...and i'm not sure how the head is going to turn out...but ya...i'll stop rambling....basic box modelling method, rendered with mental ray...and that skin color is not a texture lol, it's a basic color from 3ds max, any C&C's welcome!

No reference images? If you're a beginner, I don't think modeling a human form without the use of reference images is a good idea.

what is that?
well...casesensitve...since you wanna be all harsh like that...you gotta be pretty blind to not know that it's a human body of course
mikecarry - thanks, i realize that using no refrence images is a very bad idea, and i realized that when i got to the arms... but i'm not going for a realistic model, i want something more stylized, i am definitely going to use refrence images for certain areas of difficulty such as the arms and head, but for the most part, it's coming from the top of my head, and the knowledge i have of human anatomy. thanks for the crit tho

WEell i just finished the head, took a few extra minutes to roughly texture the eyes...turned out better than i thought it would....but it wont start looking good until i texture the rest of the face...and shag hair...i gotta fiddle around with that a bit more... but anyways, here's the head, C&C's welcome

so i started fiddling around in photoshop with a render of the head... just to get an idea of what i want the hair to end up looking like... and i'm rather happy with this conceptual image, except there is a fairly large problem... I DONT HAVE HAIRFX OR SHAG HAIR!! LOL the only thing that i do have is reactor for 3dsmax...and the only way i can make hair on there is a rope collection...either that or i go in and model each single hair one by one....even though that would give me an amazingly great product...i think it would be rather time consuming lol...and messy...but we'll see, maybe i'll unload the $500 for hairfx...from my non-existent millionaire bank account...oh the joys of being broke lol, if anyone has any ideas as to how i can solve my little problem...feel free to offer up any and all suggestions lol well...here's my image...i guess it can be considered 2½dimensional

forget hair , she doesnt look very human at the moment , i would work on that first . Get some reference and model from that , even for a stylized model its still important to understand structure , same with the body , theres alot of proportional issues with that , best of luck :)

yeh, minh,
i would concentrate on getting the basic proportions down all right before you start messing with texture and hair (or at least posting with them). you buttocks and hamstrings look better than your front. you may want to post up references in your viewports. get the shape right from the front and the side then things will be a lot easier to go from there. same goes for the head. there's a lot of stuff available at www.fineart.sk (http://www.fineart.sk) to help you. check out the material by loomis and the free reference photos. the'yre not the most ideal bodies, but they are real and they will really help. keep working. try and get your mesh to flow with the masses of the bodies. if you need help with that concept try searching for stahlbergs thread in the maya forum. it's all on topology and meshes.

thanks for the advice guys, and i agree that the back is better than the front, but i am planning to put some clothes on this thing, thanks for the link as well cleveland...but last time i followed a link to something, i ended up abandoning my wip to learn even more, if you really dig around in this wip forum, you'll find a really really really crappy model made by me...yes, even worse than this one, don't be afraid to tell it right to me...this is just bad...it somewhat resembles a person, however, like the aformentioned, the proportions are all off, and i still have a long way to go, but cut me some slack...7 weeks in cg....okay maybe 8, but thanks for the replies, i'll be sure to check out the link.

sorry minh, didn't mean to sound too harsh. i've only been modelling for two months or so, so i know how tough it is. but before i picked up any modeling package i have spent the prior 6 months studying the figure, couple of life drawing classes (not enough for sure) and pencil studies from loomis books. of the best things to study (apart from life, of course) are victoria secrets catalogues/old playboys/musclemags... studying means drawing from. then when it came to my WIP, i got out my books references etc and drew my own orthographics. loaded them in to the front and side viewports and boxed away from there. now for every body part i look at as many references as possible from as many diifering views. it's slow and time consuming, but it burns the forms into your mind. next time you'll be able to work a lot faster. if i had just jumped right in i'm certain i would have come up with a mess. i made sure i really listened and looked at what was being said on this site, too. the tiniest amount of good reference yields results. same with advice. good luck. you'll be fine. i'm still awaiting criticism on my own work, and when i get it, i'll put it into practice. we're all on the curve here...

...it's coming from the top of my head, and the knowledge i have of human anatomy.
Which is seriously lacking from what I can see. Those legs are seriously out of proportion and the torso looks like it landed under a steamroller.
well...casesensitve...since you wanna be all harsh like that...you gotta be pretty blind to not know that it's a human body of course
What did you expect? The aim of posting a wip is to have others point out the problems so that you can improve on your design. Don't get all sensitive about it.
And I'm not dissing you in any way. It's all said in good will and sort of tongue in the cheek. :)
