hello everyone
I'm trying to play with self illuminated object, and i want a good glow effect under Mental Ray.
What are the good method to have a glow all around the object? Some plug in or adding the effect on another programs like "after effects"?
other question when i use the GI with a self illuminated object the aera around the objet take the self illumination coler, but how control the strength, the distance of this secondary illumination. is it possible to control it object by object or material by material?
Here for example an orange sphere cut by a withe plane, no ligth out of the orange self illuminated sphere but i would like to have a stonger effect, in a greater disctance

Thx everyone (i'm under max 7)

Try Mental Ray with final gather & GI... but be prepared to exercise patience & many CGtalk searches.

did anybody have anymore luck with this?

i'm currently trying to use self illumination with mental ray but i dont see a difference- the other lights in the scene work fine with final gather and gi and all that. just the self illumination is not really working. is it something to do with using a mental ray material? or the 'output' shader?

i remember seeing someone do this at a discreet show but i forgot how it was done :(

Check out the Glare shade in MR, it handles colour information very good, you could search this forum on how to use it. Here's more info (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=148308) on glows.

And more (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=210905) about GI and MR.

Good luck,

Try the output shader in the self illumination slot to control brightness/distance.Hope this helps.

You can try Video Post under render. It has flare, glow, highlight, blur, and etc. Good luck with it, I am using Video Post for glow.

You can try this tutorial:
