Title: Sad Street
Name: Cetin Tuker
Country: Turkey
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop

This 3D rendered image is a mixture of Turkish, Spanish and Italian cultures. Full of Mediterranean look.

This is modelled and rendered in 3d MAX 7 and for textures I used Photoshop. All textures are hand painted based on photographic references.

I spent about 130 hours to complete this work.

U can maje all types of critiques and comments on any point.

Thank you.

Teşekkürler Ali Bey.

Thanks a lot guys. I will post the wire frame and some textures when I got home. I am at the office now.

After all the hard work, when I look at the image, I see minor bugs to be edited. I will edit them and I think I will study 2 more lighting schemes. one for a sunny day and 1 for at night. I want to see the lights, at the 2 sides on the door, turned on.

Thank you.

All in all, looks great.

There is one thing bugging me, though. Scale. The door in the back is not in scale with the the steps. If you're judging by the lamps, everything is okay. But steps look half a metre high, which is of course too much. The four of them come almost to the top of the door. OTOH, it might be a small door. But then, the lamps wouldn't be where they are, right?

Bricks seem to be problematic, too. The average brick is about 15 cm high, and these look almost twice as tall.

But the atmosphere and mood are great!

BTW, is that what doors in such small side streets in Turkey look like? In Greece they usually paint doors and windows blue, and here in Croatia they use green paint, so you get pale washed-out green after a while.

Eyvallah Aslan'ım :) :bounce:

There is no fault in scale. The larger steps on the right are not to clımb up. They are for sitting or putting flower pots on them. And also bricks are not off scale. In Turkey old bricks are 9 cm thick. So there is not a scale problem.

I will put wires soon.

YOGURT tayfasına selamlar.

I will write about the texturing process in detail. Thats not too difficult but it realy takes time. I spent more than 80 hours to paint textures in this work.

I am very sorry that I forgot to mention my render engine.

this image is rendered in built in MENTAL RAY renderer of MAX7. It took 17.5 hours to render 3636x2424 pixels image. I have a HDRI map on environment and several omni lights where needed. Some of them has minus (-) strength.

There is no fault in scale. The larger steps on the right are not to clımb up. They are for sitting or putting flower pots on them. And also bricks are not off scale. In Turkey old bricks are 9 cm thick. So there is not a scale problem.

I'm sorry to be carping on about this, but I'm talking about the four steps right in front of the doors, not about the big ones where the flowerpots are. Repeat the steps and you'll see that six of them make the height of the door. An average step is 20-30 cm, so you get either 120 cm or 180 cm as the height of the door.

Then, there's six bricks visible on the left. If you take those six bricks and repeat them, you get something like 18 bricks for the height of the door - 160 cm. And if you take 15 cm as the thickness of a brick, you get a door 270 cm high.

Please, don't take this as an attack, cause I really like the image and think that you succeeded in capturing the atmosphere and look of a small, old street. That thing with the scale is really bugging me, cause I think that otherwise the image is really really excellent.

Hi, It's really a nice work

My only questions are:

1- What is the render engine used ?

2- How much you have worked in it as post ?( Cause I don't beleive this render is achieved through a 3D render )

Once again: WELL DONE

Cheers

03-01-2005, 11:22 AM
well,

Lets look at the dimensions. 1 hand made brick is about 9 cm thick. And the mortar we used on top of it tooks about 1 cm in modern fine construction techniques. But in old times and in villages mortar is not that fine so it tooks about 1.5 somethimes 2 cm. Lets say 1 brick and the mortar on top of it tooks about 10.5 - 11 cm. So 6 bricks makes 63-65 cm. If u calculate on the pic. the door height is about 19 bricks. so the height is about 190-200 cm. this 10 cm less that we use in out homes. But for village type houses it is ok. :)

For the stairs, thay are about 20-22 cm high. İn modern architecture outside steps are about 12-13 cm but in villages steps are higher (we, citymen walk on nice flat streets but village people walk on rough land). :)

My previous education is on architecture so I dont think I made a scale mistake.

But on the other hand, I am sure I need to work a few more hours on the bricks to make them more better looking.

Thank you for your interest. I will put wires when I get home. I am at the office now.

Built in Mental Ray of max 7 is used for rendering of this scene. İt took about 130 hrs of texture model and lighting work. Final render took 17 hrs and I worked about 1 hr more on Photoshop for some minor mistakes that become visivle in 3636x2424 px big render.

A very nice image to look at, great work.
As most people on this thread will wonder, how did you do the stones in the street? Did you handpaint the shadows in, or is it all modeled? I would love to see the wires and a lighting setup. And as with every image there will always be some details which not everyone will like, but the overall look and feel of the image is fantastic :)

exellent work man....once again did u modell the stone on the floor or is it displacement.....i dont think there is any problem with the bricks and the stairs.... but i guess the drainage pipe in such place must be really dirty...and the portion of the floor underneath the pipe should also be dirty.....once again the scene is really awesome.....http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/buttrock.gifhttp://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gifhttp://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

erlik - I don't feel there's a problem with the scale. I'm not familiar with old architecture in Croatia (or Turkey), but in Portugal is not unusual to see really high, irregular steps and doors of several sizes (and colors). My grandmother's house, for instance, had the door on an old street level, so people always had to duck to get in, and a child could actually jump to touch the first tiles of the roof!!

mrsteed - Great stuff!! Pictures like this are one of the reasons I love 3D  ! You totaly succeded in getting the right atmosphere. You said you were going to modify the bricks a little - probably a good idea because they still don't seem "sunk" enough into the wall. Finally, of course, great pavement - it was displacement, right?:p

mrsteed
03-01-2005, 03:40 PM
Yeah. Displacement.

First I screen capture the plan of the floor. And I paste it on the PS. I modified my floor texture so that the rocks will not cut by the walls and the holes on the floor.
After this I re paint the rocks and the mortar area between them to build a displacement texture.

Another layer is the standart bump layer. And the last layer is the diffuse layer.

All after this process, I made minor corrections on corners on the mesh itself. It took about 10-15 hrs to complete floor. I am a bit slow.

Wow... excellent textures you painted. IF... IF... there was anything to critique ... I'd say the ground is too clean. Even a floor inside isn't that clean...much less outdoors. Some dirt, some little polygon pieces of debris or something... then it'd be perfect.

Hello again,
I have prepared the wires, gray-solid, before and after photoshop (someone said he did not believed this can be rendered by a 3d package) and details of floor texture.

The render engine is built in Mental Ray renderer of 3d MAX 7. All textures are hand painted with the help of photographic references. Except floor texture was a photograph but it was highly modified to fit on my particular floor plan. I re arrange the stones so that none of them are cut by the walls, stairs or rain outlet holes (what ever it called in english) on the floor.

Enjoy :buttrock:

Excellent piece of work. Some people hammer into things forever without getting them this finished, never mind all this 10 hour nonsense that people love to go on about.

On a slightly critical note, (and I don't know if you've thought about this or if anyone else has pointed it out already), the only weakness these tired eyes can see is:- A) the join(t) from wall to archway on the right hand side, and;- B) the wooden beams supporting the top. Its not that they really detract from your piece, its just a tiny tonal value / texture / shadow thing.

It kind of comes down to one material coming into a strong conflict with another.

I've spent quite awhile looking at 'Sad Street', pondering the deliberate imperfections you've placed within the architecture... and I must say, that there are indeed many mediteranean homes tempered with this style of rustic, but cosey construction.

Strangely... given its title... kind of makes me want to go on holiday... A real mood lifter after the awful weather my country is currently experiencing.

I love environments like this and there is absolutely nothing "sad" about it! Run down a bit but not sad. I love the way a small history is being played out here. Cetin Turker has made the wall to the right look beautifully and realistically dried out after having become wet and damp far too many times. The council [or who ever owns the properties] finally gave in after what must have been repeated harassment and installed the drains to take away the water. I feel that as a result the local tenants, in gratitude, then clubbed together to lay the new cobbled paving...

Such is depth of reality and interesting detail in this wonderful 3D picture. It speaks volumes to me...can I move in please??

VERY NICE. Also, the fact that it's all hand painted textures is nice to know as well. Much of my 3d texture work is of the same method. Takes a bit longer to create and prepare but offers much more control and flexiblity (IMO). So, nice job on the textures as well which I would venture to say (based on the scene) was around 50 to 65% of the work.

It really does have that Mediterranean look, very nostalgic.

Beautiful work, great composition. The door in the backgound seems to blend into the wall a bit. Still, I like this pic very much - Good job!

Very, very nice image!!! Beautiful textures. Have you tried the same scene with brighter sunlight? Maybe it would make it feel even more "Mediterranean".
