View Full Version : How to paint a bronze texture for games?

Hi. I am having trouble painting a smooth metallic texture. Does anybody have tips or links to tutorials for painting bronze or metal. I am not looking to use a reflection map since that is not available for the game that I might put this model in, but was wondering if there where any tricks to getting something looking more like metal in photshop. I have been painting bronze and it looks more like leather to me.
How do I insert images into this forum? Do I need to have a link?

To add images to your post, you first have to upload it to a webhost, if you don't have a webhost, I have seen some people use http://imageshack.us/ When you have uploaded your image, click on the image-button/ikon (insert image) in the post "window" and write in the whole URL in the window, that opens up. It's easier to answer your question when we can see what you're working on.

seems like image shack wont let me post multiple images..... It is going to take a while to get a website up but this will do great for now considering it's free.

I am not exactly sure which parts are bronze on your texture. Metals often have a gradation of colours. I would suggest you make a search on google for bronze, and take a look at the typical bronze colours for your objects. Bronze can vary a lot in colour, but basically I think bronze goes from gold/brass to a cooler brown, where it's darkened. There are some parts in your texture that look very saturated, more like hot/melted metal, than cool metal. I think you need to desaturate those colours.
There's an old but still very good metal texture tutorial at 3DTotal http://www.3dtotal.com/ it's in the free section, tutorials, at the very bottom.

Hope this helps.
BTW, good texture you've got there!

I just did a quick test (5 minutes) based on the middle bronze reference i found from my google search. You might want to do something less shiny I guess :)
- as madart says : find references, look at their surface properties and colours, and try to emulate that. Forget the way you think bronze looks. that's in your mind. just observe whether it's shiny, how the surface specularity works etc. (yeah yeah, aren't i a smartass)
anyways. hope this helps
all the best
