Title: Psycho Girlfriend
Name: Steven Stahlberg
Country: Malaysia
Software: Maya

Most of us have experienced that certain special someone turning into someone somewhat less than special, I think... for me it was a girlfriend who dumped me, then came back with her new boyfriend and walked off with my stereo... :) My take on "Attack of the 50 ft woman". Nothing serious, just an image I got as I was jogging one night. At first I thought I might put a small King Kong where the motorbike-dude is, make her blonde, and call it "King Kong's Nightmare", but in the end I thought that was a cheap joke.
Maya, MR rendering, a fair amount of PS painting (clouds, hair and other details). C&C welcome.

Wow for the First time I`ll be the first one..
Us usual I love it. If I can crit , I wold add some smal iluminations on the building on the right. It looks flat a bit, but other than that - GREAT!

wow, that is pure drama! with the patented Stahlberg Playboy overlay.

you rock, man! (as we tend not to say in Oxford)

:)

this is great work (and such a revealing angle).

debate point: erotica - can it be called so if the pixels are computer generated rather than photographed? For me, this is as erotic as any 'shoot'. Angry young women, mmmmmmm.

I'm quite enjoying this recent super-burst of new artwork from you, Steven. This is probably one of my fav. of your recent new ones (well, it's between this one and the fairy catcher one :)). Seems like you're having alot more fun these days! :D
It's been fun to watch the WIP thread to see the various progressions, too. I dig the improved lighting tweeks in the final image (esp. the smaller green circular lights from the windows below is a nice touch).

Well, this time I will share my thoughts.

When I open cgtalk.com and saw that little thumbnail focusing this girl, nothing else pops in my mind except: "Got be Stahlberg!".
hahaa And I am right!

Man, your art is terrific!
keep up the good work!

I reeeeeeeeeally like this image but i think she needs more crotch.

Do you remember the manga style pic where a girl was eaten ba a plant and you could only see her legs and her panties? That would be the perfect crotch for this pic.

Nice as usual, but the uniform building lights of the two towerblocks on the left look a bit out of place. Some different colours, or larger areas of darkness for closed businesses would help.

Character great. Excellent as always, but... i think that buildings in background may be more dark or more blurred and then first plan will be more clear. I'm not criticize, I'm olny hobbist, and i didn't end any school of art. I love your work and I am olny saying what I feel. Sorry for my english.

This image is really great! The lightning and composition is really dramatic.
Ive met the concept of the 50 feet tall woman before, in a french comic illustration, sorry I can't find it again. Anyways, your version really breaks the limit!

bobzilla
02-27-2005, 10:55 PM
Really great work and love the concept. (I have some experience in that department)

I am by no means in any position to crit, but it might look a little more dramatic and help some of the "dark building" prob people are mentioning if the bike was pointed more at her (or popping a wheelie...although that might be too much) and having his headlight shining on her like the classic "giant military spotlights" that are always available when a giant monster appears! Plus if the light were shining up at her a little, you'd make her even scarier looking. Well, hot AND scary...

More of a suggestion than a crit...

Powerfull stuff. You got me nightmares for today's night ;).

I think the thin rims under her left upper arm, around left side of the head/hair area and around helicopter look a bit like white 1 pixel matte, at least at this resolution.

That's awesome Stahlberg. This is a new side to your usual twisted manner. ;) Is the psycho girl constructed from the same model your using as your user picture? They look similar in a way, but not identical.

Very cool pic. I like the voyeuristic with the bike looking straight at the girls underwear. :-)

I didn't even think of that until you said it. Too funny (Damn! That's some beaver!)

Heh... I hate how giant women always wear clothes made out of unstable molecules.

Concept is good, but she really should be naked. And if you want to censor (who knows, there might be prudes in here), use building, billboards or something like that to cover strategic spots.

This is great! Eventhough I was a little critical of the last piece you posted with those 2 furry girls, I must say that this one of a giant, rampaging woman is fantastic in both style and composition. Plus, she is striking a sexy pose.

02-28-2005, 01:44 AM
absolutely amazing as usual. the atmosphere of the piece overall is very well executed, the neo-fifties horror movie. i really enjoy this work, although i wish i could see just a little more anger from her eyes. if i look just at the eyes, i lose the intensity somewhat. but your composition lends itself to move the eye around the piece, so it's not too much of a problem. i also would like to know which elements are actually 3D modeled, even the man on the bike looks as if he were a painted image. just curious. very nice.

The blending of the hair with the background is crap. it doesnt look right at all. maybe a better hair solution is needed. her hand looks like its broken and needs a cast immediately. even if this were a comic style image the hand still looks not so right. but i know wat kinda spiderman claw pose u were going for.

the render of the woman and clothing is bland compared to everything else.
overall a good idea. good execution.

i usally do not comment much on a lot of the #D work here but i have to say that this image is exactly the opposite reason why i dont comment. Many 3d works just try to create some thin and look technically good and people rave ( but if it were a photo people would coment on how boring the composition was) this image is an actual story and not just a scene i really like it for all its compositional and illustrative value

my two cents: left hand could have better grip in the building, we dont sence the strengh/tension in the fingers that cause those damages to the structure...

but anyway ;)
great work!

Wonderful work as always, Mr. Stahlberg

The composition and color palette remind me of comic book cover art back in the mid 80s. I'm actually quite liking your journey away from totally photo-real these days toward more stylized works.

As others in the thread have put it, I could tell it was yours from the thumbnail. Maybe I've studied that crinkle-nose blendshape video of yours once too often!

I'm curious about the peachfuzz-looking rimlight on her left (stage right) side. Is it an actual peachfuzz layer on top of mi_sss, a little bit of post doctoring, or just an illusion from perfectly placed rimlights?

Glad to see you getting prolific again, and in 2d as well. Keep it up -- there's a ton of us out here that really dig your work.

Lunatique
02-28-2005, 06:54 AM
Great to see you being super productive! I actually like your inital idea of King kong's nightmare--I think it fits perfectly with the tongue-in-cheek feel of the image--it lends a sense of authenticity that no unidentified chick/guy could exude.

Thanks!
Lunatique, hm maybe but it's very hard to make a gorilla-like creature read like King Kong if it's just normal size... unless I rely on the title carrying the meaning, but that seems kind of wrong. Also it's been done before (well what hasn't), I distinctly remember a blond on top of Empire State building fighting airplanes with King Kong at her feet. Could that be Frazetta? Or am I insane?

mangual
02-28-2005, 10:52 AM
Uh oh! It's been done before? Stahlberg are you sure you aren't copying another artist? Quick, when will someone put up a side-by-side comparison expose on how one of the buildings looks like one from another piece of art?

Wait - did I see a futuristic gun in there somewhere? Looks very similar! Plagiarism I tell ya.

artistic POV:  Don't like it at all. These knickers obsessions... (no, i'm not conservative, not even a puritan, i don't believe in any God,... ). Does everybody find this really class or is it just because it is a very well done (or just because she's so sexy ;) )?...

Raised a smile when I looked at this, a great image and I'm sure most people can relate to the psycho ex gf coming after you (unfortunately for me, she wasn't as pretty ;))

Good effect of her really coming at you, I had to ease away from my monitor when I opened the page.

Hi tehere,

Great work again master. But this time, for the first time I have somthing to say.

I think her hair should be more transparent. It looks she has been taken from another more sunny scene and pasted into this one.

Besides that, she really rocks.

Hi Mr. Stahlberg,

love the way it turned out. Another well deserved frontpage piece of art:wise:. Seems you have once again created quite a stir, congrats! Must say you finished it pretty fast with the new work up, very inspiring.
Love the way you tore up the clothes, and how dynamic it looks, yeah... ... the depth really comes out.
The neatest detail imo is the left arm(on screen right one), the shading on it is excellent! The oily reflections and how much deoth can be read from it, wow.

Hope to see a lot more soon!

Hi,
nice average image.
You are wasting your time, i like your work but this is step back.Sorry i dont like it very much.
Especially atmosphere, it looks a bit flatty(scamped lightning, something wrong with your skin shader), I cant recognize if it is stylization or just very quick-made image.
Im sorry, but im disagree with others. This is not very original idea neither picture for me.
But Im as always looking forward to yours next nice high quality images(as the old ones).

P.S.Sorry for my bad English.

Mr. Stahlberg,

As a recent college grad, you are my inspiration to 3D modeling and animation and I cannot wait to start another 3D model myself. The woman looks very wonderful and I like the fact her "assets" look natural and not overblown.

Ironically enough, I saw that same movie last night (Attack of the 50 ft woman) and then I saw this model again. Great work and very sweet outcome.

P.S.: You are one of my favorite artists... http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

02-28-2005, 04:18 PM
The idea to that pic is great, sorry for your ex inconveniences ;)
My crits: Her left arm/hand has a totally unnatural posture, there's no sense in it. Is she pulling herself towards or stbilizing herself or else?
I like the light from below very much, it hints on the size and position of the girl. But all the white moonlight all over her top takes everything away again. Maybe you should have positioned the moon much lower, and give her much more illumination from below. If she's this size already, go all the way by exaggerating some devious light too ;)
The helicopters may be a hommage to King Kong, but a modern helicopter would have killed whatever-size giant in no-time.
Why is her blouse torn, but anything else unscathed? I don't mind those japanese style underwear shots, but in this case it takes much of her evilness away. And there's MUCH evilness in some women, either side of the dump...

I had to rewrite this reply because the server was to busy and erased my original. And so, most of my original emotion is not in this reply.

To me you have come to a quality break-through, this and including your "The King's Fairy Catcher." The lighting glares/highlights and overall lighting is incredible. Your distortion and perspective are powerful. The aesthetics of the woman are spectacular especially around the belly button, underside of 'her' right leg, and the highlight and look of her forward protruding arm. The overall clarity balance of elements are in very high quality sync, which is far from the usual awful 3D look that in general most CG art are plagued with.
The color balance has great appeal and harmonious. Her dynamic facial emotion, body language, and wind blown hair do reinforce each other bring in so much power. This is one of my favorites. 'Monstrous' achievement Steven.

P.S. You said you got this idea while jogging. I believe it is the workings of your super-conscious imagination. By the way for anyone who cares, they come when your mind is most at peace.

Yep its a great picture, however the Buildings on the left look flat, most people said this already
but could it be our screen setting is different
Anyway, the biker reminds me of that Levi's double sticthed claymation comercial (with the bombastic music)

biker dude should now zoom, hit the brakes hard and launch himself straight for whats in front of im

It's amazing where peoples motivation and inspiration comes from, at least something marvelous came out of the break up (sorry to hear about it)... personally I would of made her and UGLY evil bitch, whether she was good looking or not.

Top work! hope the new boyfriend electrifies himself on that stereo.

i think youre breaking records here...you got,like,3 front pages in something like 2 weeks
i definately admire the hard work...im lazy...i have a front page every 2 years

i love that image, and i liked the last one with tha cat and mouse a lot...the cat and mose
image had a very destinct border where u can seperate the 3d from the painting, but maybe
it doesnt show as much and it bothers only me....but it shows a lot less in that image
so thats good(but maybe its because it has less"paint"on it),but since you have managed
to refine certain things to perfection,i think that transition between 3d and paint should
be refined, the 3d is a bit too clean and fine and it sticks out of the painting...but its very
fine,almost unnoticeable

i love this image thogh, very amusing,it can work both ways,my bf dumped me for someone
els,and bothered to show up with her everywhere i was too....in that case,i wish i was the
huge woman and he was that tiny guy down there and i whould rip his evil ass apart:)

seriously now,as for the image itself, the first thing that poped was her bra,it doesnt look
right,it doesnt look like its tight on the flesh, unlike the panty line which looks very
convincing...theres this dark space between the fabric and her breasts,it shows a lot less
on the open gl image,so most of it must be the lighting, there are no highlights there
either, looks very flat, unlike the open gl image where you can see the bodys shape, like,
the line from under the armpit that defines the shape of the breast and the depression
between the breasts, its all compleatly flat in the light,so maybe thats why the bra doesnt
look right,i dont know...i love the details around the weists thogh...

Hi Mr. Stahlberg,

the inspiring parts of your girlfriend(s) allways made me envious.
Having collected pretty much every snippet of your work published
online I can say without any hesistation - the anatomy, proportions
and also the beauty of your girls is simply top notch. sexy as well.

No crits there. Still, I have some suggestions you may find useful.

Itīs mostly regarding the texturing and to some degree the lighting.
Every element has a beautiful shading, thereīs rimlights, trillions
of little windowlights and some neon uring itīs shine on everything.

Itīs simply a bit too much to direct focus on the girl. she doesnīt
stand out, she is lost between the backroundelements screaming for
attention. Thereīs too uch ambient and not enough difference between
foreground and "backroundplate".

After all, itīs about the girl going to crush the bike (and the boy), isnīt it?

One area that misleads me most is the lower part of the image, between
the parking deck and her knees and ankles (whereīs her right ankle?).
To much light there - too much detail. Iīd try to concentrate a bit
more on her slip and have the sourounding area drop off into shadow more...

Lighting her more like a boyscout w/flashlight at "Camp Frightnight", probably.

To sum it up, every element looks good but they rival for attention.
Due to their proportions and lighting they look a slight bit too selfish
to make the backround come together.

Cheers

tim

P.S: Thanks for this image, I learn alot. More than I can accomplish (ever).

I`m so glad to see a great job like that, and i really need years to complete a work as it, iīm so honest. But, this is a forum, and i want to make a question to all you.
Do you not think that girl`s breast needs more volume?...I mean, I think her breast need more shadow couse it seems to be flat, or not?
Thatīs an observation, and I glad someone answer me.-

Again, I want to remark that it is a great job, and the idea is just too original...

Totally disagree. The girl is perfectly clear. She's the focal point without a doubt and does not fall behind in the glimmer of the lights. The image is striking BECAUSE of the lights. Without the light's all over the buildings, it wouldn't feel like the city it is supposed to be!

Most of us have experienced that certain special someone turning into someone somewhat less than special, I think... for me it was a girlfriend who dumped me, then came back with her new boyfriend and walked off with my stereo... :)

she's green because she uses a sss shader with nodes not recognised by the native Maya renderer
Funny that! My initial thought was that she should be green and be the Hulk's ex girlfriend! :D
Great perspective and overall nice image. Now how about a 2D version of it? ;)

I can kinda figure why this girl is so angry... Her (ex-)boyfriend prolly mentioned she had a very big ... :p

I have to say I Love the lower right (from the viewers perspective) Thigh/Calf that is scrunched up into the plaza level of the bulding. - The way the light is patterned and constricted in direct combination with her constricted, fatty, joint structure. It's just an exquisite, sensual, visual metaphor for the confusion and anger in this creature.

I love it when unique details like this mesh with the overal feeling of the subject matter. Especially, like in this case when they seem hidden until further introspection and it's like- picking a Strawberry in a field after searching for it.

You know, I think the trick here may be the Realistic detail on the pavement in the foreground which leads the eye into seeking out more information in the depths of the picture which may have a higher degree of artistic license.

I've got to REMEMBER this thigh and the possible tactical visual techniques he has employed.

its cool BUT i dont like her expression take away the enire scene an she looks like super model type fake agressiveness for a photo shoot i know you can do better than that .Maybe she should show more agression in the bikers direction ,cause it looks like she is threating him to a view of her goods rather than trying to come over that rail

overall good composition and pleasing to the eye, but i think you painted skin texture is better

This blows me away, I am new to 3D having only dabled in the past. And it is this sort of thing that gives me the energy and inspiration to learn and practice as much as i can, i find this model to be full of personality, probably due to the fantastic pose. And the model is great sort of softened features and slightly to perfect, yet instead of being sterile it is full of feeling and energy. and clever idea behind it to...

I have a couple of questions rather than a crit, how did you begin? and do your 2d works use some sort of 3d models as reference , or for to reword for this piece how do you plan this scene, loose sketches, detailed, scribble and jump in? (i will scour cgtalk for this info)

After seeing this i searched through the forum fro more of your work, and they are all mind blowing.

I am currently churning through tutorials in the hope that i can create work of this standard one day (i know high standards but you have to aim for the top ) hoping to put up my first WIP soon, but long journey to go....

thanks for inspiration

Stahlberg
03-24-2005, 03:45 PM
Thanks everyone! :)
kuma cub, this started with an idea I had while jogging at night, looking at some tall buildings in the distance. I drew a sketch as soon as I got back home, then created the 3d by building the city bits, importing the vehicles, and using the 3d character I already have. I also tried to find some reference for the pose, but it's so unusual that didn't work out very well. I had some problems with Mental Ray rendering and a file that got corrupted at saving, but I worked it out.
And yes, I do also sometimes use my 3d character like illustrators would use that old wooden poser doll in the past, for reference. I recently started doing that (for instance in my 2 latest 2d paintings posted here), and I plan to try to do more of this.

Hi Steve! ByteDreams here! ol friend.
The pict is great! love the action. one thing I note though, and I only take the liberty cuz I know how detailed you like your stuff to be.. the building she is grabbing onto - looks like a flesh wound. Was that intentional? I don't see any debrie falling so made me wonder.

Anyways, you still are the master of my 3D heart, buddy!

14 pages!

wow, so to help me out without forcing me to trawl through the whole thing ... did the sexy pixel debate point I raised on page one of this lovely thread get discussed in any way, shape or form? With sexy images, does it matter if the final pixel is a pixel of a real 'object of desire' or a rendered 'object of desire -- I mean, in the long run, is there any differentiation between a sexy pixel and a sexy pixel? Especially when artists like Stahlberg are so adept at rendering the emotion of their rendered creations.

:)
