I was putting thermal compound on my northwood 3ghz and for the first time I made it wrong and didn't put it like on arctic silver web page http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_...nstructions.htm (http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm) but I covered all heat spreader.
So when I noticed that I did it uncorrectly I wiped it from compound but when wipping, compound get deep into this small hole on spreader. I was trying to get it out using idle but it even get deeper and now it touching the chip. Now can anyone tell me if it's bad? My temps are 40C when doing nothing and about 60C on full load, but anyway is it something bad when gthermal compound get into this hole?

Hi,
afaik covering or filling the hole will have no adverse effects. There are no parts in or under the spreader of a P4 that can take damage from it. Athlons are different here, since they have contacts on the surface that should not get in contact with the paste.

Hmm, that's interesting. I thought the Athlons (64) basically just put that plate over the die. Prior to the heat spreader it was normal to put thermal paste directly on the die.

The Athlon64/Opteron have no holes in thier heat spreader. And the previous chips were the bare die ;) so...

About that post:

Kind of interesting, them saying its non-conductive. The entire point of thermal paste is to conduct heat :P Also, Artic Silver is made of silver (ok maybe not any high percentage but..).. which as far as I know is a metal, and metal conducts electricity ;)
