hey,

is it normal that way, that when i convert a nurbs surface to a subdiv surface the subdivs dont have any UVs or mapping info?
(i have to create them again with the subd->texture menue)

i think this is a bit strange..
never really did a lot with subds so sorry for my dumbness..

cant find anything in the manual about it either

cheers

I'm not sure at all, but as you know, NURBS don't have UV's at all, because NURBS surfaces are automatically planes, making the use if UV's useless. So, if you convert from NURBS to subdiv, where/how would subdiv surfaces get their UV's from?

Well actually NURBS have UV's, but it works differently. There is one U and one V direction on a NURBS plane and if you convert it to polygons you'll see that it lines up just like a square. However when you convert it to Sub div's it doesn't seem to work...

Strange...

thanx all...
i skipped the subDs anyway since they were way to slow for a very big terrain i need to do.. so back tu nurbs..

and wt: afaik the term "UV-mapping" comes from nurbs surfaces, since they have implicit UV coordinates due to their nature as being just a mathematic formula and like that every point on the surface has a U and a V coordinate without the need of mapping.

lets see if they fixed all that in 4.5.. naah :)

cheers & thanx again

Heck, I was again thinking completely different things when writing my reply :)

So, yes I know NURBS have UV's. I ment it just like you said Graf, you don't need to modify NURBS' UV's, because they are already in a square, because of the way NURBS are made.
And I intended to write that it seemed weird that because NURBS already have "perfect" UV's, why those wouldn't get "exported" with the surface when converting to polys or subdivs...

Gotta keep my mind focused more on to the topic next time ;)

LOL :p

i hate it when this happens :)
you are not alone wt.. believe me..

There is a workaround i figured when thinking about Maya's new SubD->NURBS function. If you want to transfer your "UVs" from NURBS to SubD, you could convert the NURBS to medium-res poly, then use the script over at Highend that takes a poly's UVs from a NURBS surface using a closest point on surface node (very clever, but can't for the life of me think what it's called), convert to SubD's et voila! Will probably need a little cleaning up in the UV window but not much!
