Title: The Birthday Party
Name: Matthew Baldwin
Country: United States
Software: LightWave 3D, Photoshop
This is the image I sent into this year's Expose. Ultimately, I don't know how successful it is--I've lost the ability to see straight with it. It's a scene I would drag out every few months and tinker with. I guess I was influenced by Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party, and a bit of the mad tea party and the last supper thrown in to boot. I was going for a shallow diorama-like environment. I mean what's not to like about good dioramas? The American Museum of Natural History is one of my favorite places. I was there again today with my family.

I like it image, nice lighting setup, but do have 2 niggles...
1: the big guy in the background you can see is pupil, and in the foreground, his eye is all white?
2: the little people, it seems like the floor reflections are covering them a bit, and they don't stand out too much, infact those lighter coloured reflection marks on the floor look like they are going over everything if you can see what i mean.

Absolutely incredible work! What I love most about this image is the mystery about it.. I found myself trying to create a story about the scene to work out what was happening. Truly amazing artwork! 5 stars from me. I really hope I see this in CGChoice soon..

well happy freaking birthday!
that image is great! im guessing the picture on the wall represents the ritual of the birthday, only this time around theres no people left, jeez I wonder where they are. Although first guess would be he ate them. Love the transition in the image, everything warm on the left and cold on the right from where he came.

Im getting the impression, that is some kind of steam emminating from the floor as everything is freezing on the right side.

Wow! Congratulations! This is this kind of fresh ideas I love to see. A picture with a disquiet concept. Everything is great but the thing I love the most is the good compositing fix between the 2D painting in the background with the 3D characters. It makes... I dont know... a rhyme to me. Congrats again!
awesome, great expression and mood
absolutely love it
Fantasic image! And I definitely like the composition and how the forground interacts with picture on the wall.
Usually when observing a 3d image I focus my attention on the technical part i.e. HOW the piece was made but rarely it happens when I'm interested in WHAT does it MEAN. And that is the case.
So, could you explain a bit more about the concept of the image. Who is the character? Who are those two little on the floor? How does the hanging picture correlate with the action on the foreground?
I can try to guess of course but it'd be very exciting to hear from you.

Reminds me of the red legged scissor man from the old Struwwelpeter book. Not the character himself but just the velocity of it all. Scary stuff and top marks too.

Wow.
Leonard, I'm honored you've plugged me on your masthead--thanks!
I'm sorry I can't respond to everyone specifically, but I really appreciate all your comments. I'm really pleased that many of you picked up on some of the feelings I was trying to put down--great!
Naenae, AZTGlorY, Koogle, vudu:
the 2 characters on the floor, lower right are toy figures/dolls(?). The final res of this piece is roughly 4500pixels across, so they are easier to make out at the final size. I'll try to post a bigger pic of them as well as a few snaps of other details.
I was trying to create some sort of heightened relationship between the picture on the wall and the real elements in the room. So a lot of what's represented in the framed picture repeats(even abstractly) with what shows up elsewhere. The boy/girl figures have their counterparts in the picture, sitting in the foreground near the chef. At the 4500pixel res you can even make out the association between the fly seated at the table(picture)and the one that's landed at the table under the chef's chin.
I was hoping to create a little tension by depicting a rather full-formed narrative within the picture on the wall and then showing only half the table in the real(?) room. Trying to have the viewer make their own conclusions as to what's going on at the head of the table, whether there's anyone/thing seated similar to the forcefully blindfolded one in the picture.
Koogle, you commented on the foreground reflections, and I have to say, the jury's still out on that. They were intended to be a little enigmatic, not so much floor reflections. Rather a bit of a aknowledgement of the unrealness of the image. You've got the wall picture, the surrounding diorama environment, and I wanted to create a little 3rd reflection from the viewers(yours/mine)perspective, creating a mirror-upon-mirror feeling. In the end, I'm not sure how successful it is in conveying that. It does help a bit formally, in that it quiets down the objects on the floor and helps tie them together.
As for the Chef, no pupil. I was going for something unreal, a bit uneasy and implaccable. All lunging force, a little phallic and viper-like, no ears!(and one blind eye, if you want to push the penile reference!).
thanks again to all.
I'll post a few associated images when I get the chance.

neofisk,
Yeah, there's something vaguely ed big daddy roth about the pose of the chef. I was seriously envious of my older brother's Odd Rod stickers when I was 7.
3D strong,
I think I know what you are saying--I wouldn't want my young kids looking at this image either. While there isn't any explicit violence, there is implicit threat, and it's intended for an older audience. It's bleak and creepy, but I was also going for darkly comic.

the painting on the wall is a combination of 2d and 3d elements. The characters as 2d illustrations that I mapped onto 3d planes placed in this shallow little room environment.

super work. the lighting is excellent (the shadows on the tipped over chair, from the two kids in the bottom right corner) the painting on the wall, dipicting the same scene but different?) and the style is different).. one of the other awsome things that I really love about it, is the whisp of smoke from the ciggy, suggesting a quick slashing motion to the table, and then as if he is coming to a sudden hault. p.s the milk eye mender is esspecially creepy. lol.
awsome work. keep it up.

Hi,
Wow! great scary toonish composition. The face of this guy looks is amazing, i like it a lot.
Only three things I would change:
1. The cigarrete tells me this guy arrives very fast to the table to frighten the other guys but, he looks very static...
2. His hands, I would make them harder, dirty, and biger hands.
3. I would make the knife more scary... some oxid, scratches, etc.
Cheers,
