i've heard that max 5 has a new global illumination system. how good is it? i'm using max4.2 so i want to find out whether there are any good global illumination plugins available in the market. which would be better, upgrading to max 5 or buying a plugin?

to make sphere on a plane, max5 GI renderer is nice. For more complexe scene, better go for finalRender or Brazil (Vray is a good raytracer but GI is too flat, no details)

well, I don't agree. Max 5 GI is REALLY slow, that's true. But it's not that bad...and offers different solutions for different situations...LightTracer Engine for outdoor daylight scenes, and Radiosity Engine for interior lighting simulations. Off course, Brazil and FinalRender are the choice for high-end solutions...

The GI the Lighttracer produces is, amazingly, apparently flicker-free. That's a pretty neat bonus in my book. finalRender and Vray sure can't claim the same.. I'm.. not sure on Brazil. Haven't had a chance to test that one.

But flicker-free is good imo, even if it takes a good damn while to get the results.

a test with a ball & cube...

and it was very slowwwwwwwwwww !!! a ball & a cube !!!!!!!

I didn't even try with a more complex object

Here's a discussion from not too long ago, covers pretty much the same stuff. =)
