View Full Version : Nautius (Disney 2k Leagues style)
BrockSamson 02-26-2005, 04:22 AM This is my first WIP. I've been working on this model in my spare time for several months. While I have a BA in computer animation I'm mostly self tought when it comes to poly modeling. This is only the second fully poly model I've ever done. I'm still not sure about how much it I should have left as seperate geometry or is it best to combine everything that doesn't move? Anyway, I'm happy with the mesh and am currently texturing, I'm about 85% done with the bump map and then I'll move on to color and spec. Crits and comments are welcome!

So far you're doing amazingly well. Update when you can with more angles and shading.

I've added the bump to the top area. The side fins are about all that is left to do, bump wise. In case any one is wondering how I'm doing the rivets, it basically goes like this, "click, click, click, click, click, clickclick clickity click friggin click....holy crap my finger hurts."
I also chaged the vents on top so that they can open. I'm planning on compositing this model into video of a dry dock and because it will be out of the water it made sense to have them open. I work not too far away from some very industrial dock areas so I have plenty of background material to work with. Again, comments and crits welcome.

Damn, thats a hell of a lot of rivets. Good model though.
Edit - I think that the over-use of rivets is kinda taking away the focus of the model.

Sorry for the long period with no updates, I've been fighting a nasty cold. As far as the number of rivets, I did'nt design it . It was designed by a fellow by the name of Harper Goff for the 1954 Disney adaptation of 20,000 leagues. I was inpired to create this model when I saw that they were removing the old 2K Leagues ride from Disney World (it closed around ten years ago). While I only ever rode it once when I was very young I always thought that the subs looked so cool, I had to create one as my ode to it.

Rivets are done! Finally. The hardest part was unwrapping the area around the large window in the center of the hull. I also had problems getting my normals all pointing in the right directions. If anyone with good Maya kung-fu can enlighten me as to why I needed to reverse my normals so much I would be forever grateful. I'll be moving on to color next. Comments and crits welcome.
p.s. Can someone tell me how to rename the thread title? It's miss-spelled. I'm such a retard.:)

The exterior is done. (WooHoo!):) I was was kind of torn on what color I was going to use, in the film it is a bronze/ copper color, but the ride vehicles at Disney World were green. I found some pictures of the Nautilus at the Disneyland is Paris and and fell in love with the way they painted it. Its a great compromise of both bronze and green.

I sampled five different colors from this photo and randomly painted them together in PS. I also wanted the surface to look weathered, because like I said above, I intend to have this model up out of the water in a dry dock, so it makes sense that it shouldn't look like new. I used a light green color for the surface corrosion. I still need to model a simple interior for the wheel house and the salon, as well as some kind structure to support it in the dry dock. Anyway I very pleased with the results. C & C welcome.

Well I think its time to call this thing done. If I ever get around to it I'll composite it into an HDRI image next to the water. My original plan to place it into an existing dry dock fell though when I was unable to get any good photos of our local dock yards. Instead I decided to model an 1800's ish dry dock, in hind sight the dry dock makes it kind of hard to show the sub because its basically sitting down in a hole. Oh well, it still looks kinda cool. I also did a somewhat simple interior. I was intending to at least render this in Mental Ray, but for some reason my MR just locks up every time I try to use it, I give up for now.
Anyway, enjoy. C&c still welcome as I'll probably come back to this later.:)
