View Full Version : XSI polygons into 3DSMAX
Gonzo The Great 09-18-2002, 02:45 AM Anyone know of a plugin to import XSI polygons into MAX.
Nurbs are done fine with IGES
The way I heard it is done is Wavefront (.OBJ) Importer/Export in both programs, but I have version 1.5 and I think the only way is with version 2.xx.
Any clues?
Cheers

Deep Exploration from Right Hemisphere should be able to handle much of your translation needs. Also, there are plenty of importers for MAX. If it doesn't have what you need, look for a freeware importer at www.max3d.com

Thanks but I don't have access to the RH software. I own every importer and exporter I think written! But the tools you need to get the job done - are always found after the F*&*in' thing is done.
You wouldn't be the Mr. Davis on the site you suggested by any chance? :scream:

The dotXSI format can take models from Max into XSI but currently there is no importer for Max. This format might make sense as it is designed to take data between various versions of XSI and other platforms. Its an open format, but i'm not sure of all the features it supports, like as XSI has no splines does dotXSI support this?
It would be great anyway to have an importer for Max, this would allow importing scenes from XSI and Maya, as I understand there is a dotXSI exporter for Maya. Anyone want to take up ther challenge?

The best way to get geometry back and forth is with OBJ import/export. However if you do not have that available to you, another option is to script your own OBJ exporter. The OBJ format is extreamly simple and should be pretty easy to write. I'm not framiliar with the Softimage scripting language, but in max it's a snap.

You can get a 30-day demo of Deep Exploration from here (http://www.righthemisphere.com/support/downloads/downloads.php3?product=Deep%20Exploration). :)

I think I'll just convert the Polys to Nurbs and use .IGES in/out for the time being.

The script for Polygons to Nurbs I found in the XSI forum worked okay, finally.
GUMBOOT - and everyone else
But I found that downloadable Deep Hemisphere DEMO, which I presumed wrongly, DID NOT have any limitations such as deleting every 5th polygon etc. But it only saves the first five key frames of animation and a 30 day trial period, as usual. But for my modelling only purpose, it did great... and XSI Quad Polys did not convert to MAX Tri Polys.... but quad just as I wanted.
A great product.
Thanks Gum

hi
have you tried out the free fbx format exporter/importer
they are available for 3dsmax,lightwave,maya soft and xsi and export models, materials, animation, cameras and lighting to different extents in each app.
lightwave can export a boned animated character for example and you can import this into 3ds with animation intact.
