View Full Version : extruding probs in maya
I extrude edges in maya but after 1 or 2 extrudes then next has edges go all over the place. Does the same with polys after a fair few extrudes even after I clear the history.
Any easy solution to fix this ?

I/m not sure exactly what your problem is, but remember the little blue dot on the manipulator will allow you to switch your extrusion axis, and there's a toggle in the extrusion tool to keep faces together. You can change the faces together toggle after the operation in the channel box.

I think that might be your problem, what McCronin said. Go under the Polygons menu and find where it says Keep faces together and make sure it is checked . If you select multiple faces or edges and extrude them all at once they will break apart if this isnt checked.

i think i know what you mean....its a pain..
try this...
once youve extruded your first face click onto the "Move Tool" then extrude again..
it somtimes has a problem extrudeing when you are using the manipulator tool, once youve moved your face just click onto the move tool and extrude again..
hope that makes some kind of sence ?
Yea mushroom that works but not on some occasians. Yes I am using keep faces together, thats not what i ment, when extruding they stretch up, down, in and out heh.
Also with edges, all extrude together apart from the bottom 1 which extrudes inward.

The problem comes from the poly normals not always facing the same direction. If you use the extrude tool, you will see a litle double blue dot up and to the right of the tool. This lets you toggle from extruding in normals direction vs. in world. If you click it once, it will make your tool change slightly, and centering it's position in you extrusion. I think if you do that it solves all your problems. See if that helps.
edit... I see that McCronin mentioned this already, oh well, it never hurts to mention it again.

try extruding in different axes if it's not behaving right, that usually works for m, although it makes no sense
the 'click on the blue dot' thing works so i do not need anymore replys thx ;D
