Welcome to ART Fundamentals week at the Daily Sketch forum.
The idea is to go back and practice core skills for one week.
Portraiture: We will be drawing today portraits, from photos posted on this thread.
In order for this to work we need photos (of links to them). So please post photos of either yourself, a family member, or maybe a pet or a celebrity, so the artists have material to work with..
People will pick from the photos on the thread and and paint a portrait, referencing the photos that have been posted.
(The final image can be stylized, or realistic. Just emphasize a likeness of the model.
If you wish you can paint a portrait from one of your own pictures, BUT post the source image to see how succesful you have been,
The voting thread will be posted next Wednesday, so you guys have until then.
Check out these links below for reference purposes:
http://www.geocities.com/bearsclover/portraits/tips.html

The rules....
Welcome to the cgtalk sketch group.
We will try to post one of these topics once a day for your enjoyment.
These are the rules:
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* 640 x 480 / 480 x 640 OR 800 x 600 /600 x 800
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.
Good luck
-Roberto

wow!
great topic!
Maybe making portraits of people around can be a way to calm down the great yet freaking avatar wars.
I hope someoneīs posting images soon or Iīll have to go on Harry Callaghan (Clint Eastwood).

You guys are a friendly bunch so I thought I`d ask these here, ignore if you wish
1.white is white because it reflects all colours, what does it not reflect that crome does?
2.I`m interested to know if the good artists are the ones who can close their eyes and see an image in their heads and if the others are like me and are unable to do this consciously even though my dreams are quite vivid
thanks for any replies
augustus

LightFreeze->Simply, white surfaces reflect incoming parallel rays to many directions, because these are rough surfaces. This is called diffuse reflection. Crome is a smooth surface and incoming parallel rays remain pretty much paralel after reflection. And this is called specular reflection.

yeah, white is reflecting wavelentghs not objects.
To the second, Iīm not a great artist but I think that great artists donīt stop working. And finally, if you donīt naturally have this talent about imaging everything... you will develop it by painting constantly. Itīs like once youīve painted 1000 hands, you can imagine howīs a hand in any pose. Donīt be stressed about getting good results and draw, and paint, and look, etc.

You're possibly only my 2nd attempt at drawing a guy realistically (the first was my bf, and it was a disaster lol) your pic is the only one I'll be working on today since I'm really rushed for time. I'll update it in painter (better shading than in photoshop) when I am done with today's workload.
I'm really really really shy about posting pics of myself, so i'm just going to quickly post this pic I took a few mins ago with my shitty webcam, and run before I chicken out! :scream:

Hey everyone! This is really great getting back to the basics, and I think you have all been doing really great work this week. I decided to do a little process to show how I basically lay things in and take something to a finished level. Anyhow, this took about 1 hour or so with photoshop. It's not a perfect likeness, but then again this is mostly about shadows, highlights, etc. Anyways, here it is!

Hey AtmaWeapon - cool! I'm glad you didn't do a paint-over. I'd much rather see how an artist translates a photo on their own without the paint-over help. It makes the finished piece much more interesting.

Then after I'm done, for the first time... I'll post my ugly mug. Time to blow the dust off the ol' digi camcorder...
This thread has turned into another "Don't be shy, show a pic of yourself" thread. Who are all these new people anyway? I don't remember seeing many here in Daily Sketch before?
Anyhoo ... Roberto you remind me of Jason Alexander for some reason. Not that you look like him, just that pic has a "George Castanza" feel to it. Happy Birthday dude! :D

I really need to change my wacom tablet. It's the least accurate, smallest, not pressure or anything sensative, oldest, wacom you can ever find. What I'm really missing with it is the freedom I have with traditional art. What wacom would you guys advise me that will resemble traditional tools (pencil, pen, what ever)?

Here's mine...this is the first time that I enter, and the first time I do a complete painting all digital with my new Wacom. I used the ref picture of http://www.desireejreynolds.com/forumme.jpg at the first page. I really liked the classical pose and the soft window light. I really tried capturing that mood, and I am reasonably satisfied with that. The proportions arent right (yet) so it isn't a good likeness yet IMO. Comments always appreciated ofcourse :)

First off, Desiree, thank you for posting your portrait... absolutely beautiful and easy-ish lines for this beginner to work with. :-)
I grayscaled the portrait, and drew a grid in PhotoShop. Printed it out, and sketched it within a grid I drew in my sketch book (Thank you Robin for teaching me that!) Then, I scenned my sketch into PhotoShop, deleted the grid, then colorized. I'm rather proud of myself on this attempt. All in all it took me about an hour and a half to do the sketch, and about an hour in PhotoShop. I'm going to post all of my steps, so I can maybe get some feedback from you masters out there! :-)

Hey Vitriolic - Good one as per and iaw...I especially like the hair; looks great - and parts of it has a 'crayon on textured paper effect' which eludes me...
Evidently im still alive - so here I will push my luck:

There are some pretty sweet portraits being done here. Esp. from...FridayEve, JVaughan, 2 great ones from Vitriolic, and Enayla to name a few...
Here's one from me, about 20 or 30min on paper. It's a little off, but hey, it's a sketch right? I wish I had time to do one digitally but on the weekends all my little brothers take over and play games ;), just had time now to scan it in and post it.

Hayseuss- That's not a bad start. 2 crits: her eyes appear to be kind of bugged out too much. The eyelids should appear in front of the eyeball and the eyeball set back in the head a little more. The corners of her mouth should be lifted ever so slightly in a smile. I think some shading would really help too.
Kelli - nice colorized version. I think you are really starting to get the hang of faces now. Its just a matter now of learning to do it without the grid.
Friday - excellent sketch, as usual! Welcome back.
Thumbs up also to Mr.Damage, JVaughn & digital_embryo

Well, I was going to get as many as I could on a standard 11X14 page. But kids are sick and a lot going on around my house this weekend. Here's 6 people all done in about 15 minutes each. So ... (does math and hurts head) ... 1hour and a half? Pencil on paper.

Hey, if I'd known that posting photos of myself would set my face and hair up for constructive criticism, I think I'd rather not have. I love crits on my paintings, not on my looks :/ sorry. That's not really what this thread is here for, right? (And, by the way, the braids are way easier to manage than my jaw-length actual hair)
Thanks to those who've painted me, I've saved every one of them on my hard drive. Awesome looking, and very flattering :]

Bealobo - I started using the tablet almost a year ago. It took a few months just to get comfortable with it. But at that time, I wasn't drawing everyday. In the time since the beginning of January, that I've been drawing everyday with it, it has really started to feel natural drawing on the tablet.
With the undo command at my finger tips, I've found that I'm much more loose and willing to experiment than I ever was drawing on paper.

Finally had time to sit down and comment on all the portraits done of me. First off thank you so much to those who took the time to paint me :D
DesireeJReynolds -- love it :) The colours are all sparkly and sweet, reminds me a lot of how I used to paint fairies and fey a while ago :] Very flattering.
element5 -- Absolutely love the style you used here. Very sketchy and nifty, almost like a reflection on trembling water.
leitchy -- The picture just refuses to load. Ill check again later and see if itll work then :/
gizmodus -- Whoo, love it. You somehow caught that fairytale feel I was aiming for with the photo :)
Vitriolic -- Wow, Im amazed :D The likeness is actually almost uncanny, you caught a lot of my defining features here. Also love how you did the pale stripe in the bang, it really looks like hair. And great colours, no matter whether they were picked off the image or not. Very smooth, green tones (I love green)
FridayEve -- Awesome colour use here :D Its so weird, because youve picked colours I often use in my self-portrait photos anyway (reddish-purple), so if I just quick-look at it, it looks like one of my photos rather than a portrait. I love the way you made the hair look (especially the brush strokes near the bottom of the braids)
deaderthanred -- I look so cute! Love the look you caught in my eye, there. Thats me in my flirty mode, ha ha. Also, very nice background colour and how you just picked out a few highlights with brighter tones.
crazy3dman -- Hahah, man, you caught the essence of me! I love the evil colour scheme, and how absolutely wicked my eyes look. Also love the stitches, its like a combination of the real me and the avatar me from the avatar wars :D (Also, like how you caught my profile. My nose has an odd curve to it that people tend to miss somehow)
El-Rodente -- Me likey :] very expressionistic and stylistic piece, there. I look almost scared (rather than scary, as in crazy3dmans portrait, heheh)
The Ton -- love, love, love that picture of me. I look delightfully evil, and the way Azraels eyes glows is just perfectly wicked! Great way of doing the braids, too, they look almost as if they sparkle! (also, ha ha, Azrael as the EVIL beast in your second version just ROCKS)
mybutterflyiris -- Oo, beautiful colour use. I love the blue of the background and the colours you picked for my skin. Very nice :D
JDShaffer -- Awesome style on this one. Ive never seen my picture done in cel-shading like that, it looks wonderful. The expression on my face seems so melancholy, almost.
Phew, thats it, I think. All of them. Again, thanks :D

crazy3dman: Thanks, the dress took me the longest of anything.
Art2: Thanks. Yeah, for some reason Enayla reminds me of Arwen a bit, she has that regal high elf quality to her..so I had Arwen in mind when I painted it.
