hey Potato77,
you could try making the object "live" then draw a line on the dagger.
then you can offset the line, so that the line's not on the dagger surface.
then try extruding along the line...
hope that helps.

i dunno how you would do it in max, but in LW, i would draw a closed curve around the object then use rail extrude, i'm sure max has something similar. basically its just a matter of tweaking some points, extruding and looking at it, then readjusting and extruding until it looks right

well i think thats how i have been going about it. just have to do it better i guess. thanks for the tips.
in maya, u can animate a circle and then "create animated sweep". is usefull fore regular surfaces

if your daggers handle is perfectly straight, you could use lathe with a vertical offset

I made a little mini tut over on renderosity.com at the rhino forum for this type of thing not too long ago, I don't know what your software is, but I just used a tight helix around the handle, then a pull to get the helix onto the surface of the handle, followed by making a chain link, (or whatever you decide to use) and an array along curve, some 3D scales here and there to tweak it, but it worked out. If you need the link let me know...I'll have to dig it up...I know I've still got it on this dusty hard drive somewhere still.
