Hi all,

I got my wacom, my notebook, my sketchpad, mechanical pencil, and electric eraser. All I need to become comletely desk independent, a true road warrior artist, is a portable scanner to scan sketches into photoshop. Any of you got suggestions? I'd prefer a USB powered one, and it should easily fit into my laptop bag.

Thanks.

wow, those are cool. I didn't know they made portable flatbed scanners. Did you get to feel how heavy your co-worker's was? I don't recall seeing any weight stats on the newegg links. The only thing negative is that they may be a little too big. They're larger than my current notebook, so it will really stuff up my bag. Do you or anyone else here have experience with sheetfed type scanners? I think they may be more portable. http://images10.newegg.com/ProductImageCompressAll125/38-113-002-03.JPG (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=38-113-002&DEPA=0)

Thanks

that thing only has 600x600dpi. The second canon one has 2400x2400. You do the math...:)

it was lighht weight i recall... Alot of electtronics/office supply stores carry these so you could check it out in-store

but seriously hauling a scanner around with you all the time is probably going to kill the innards. My older scanner had a lock switch for locking the mechanism when you moved it around.

I can't imagine the sheetfed thing would give you anywhere near the quality of a flatbed and you have to tear your pages out of your sketchbook to feed them in.

It's your dime

Just got the Canon Lide 35 to replace my old "we don't make them so no XP drivers" Agfa Snapscan.
Depends what you want it for but the resolution is 1200 x 2400 should be fine for most peoples needs, very lightweight but nicely put together.

Got it for £49.95 UK money. It has a lock on the underside and takes it power from the usb port. Use usb 2 for faster scanning and no problems.

Take a look at the Canon web site for details. They even give you a small plastic stand that clips to the front so you can use it stood on its side. You get the USB cable inside as well.

It does not scan slides or transparencies but I dont really need that. The other one mentioned is twice the price and a bit more.

If you are only going to take it with you occasionaly you could use the box the comes in as its small, has protective poly inside and even a little carry handle on the top.

The scanning options are not as intuitive as could be but they are there with a little bit of sussing out. As in dpi, area to scan etc.

I can remember the days when they cost a small fortune, buggers to set up with cards needed in your computer and dip switches to alter, and hours on the support line trying to get the damn things working. History now thank goodness.

I believe you can even scan 3D objects with it although I'm only using it for scanning pictures etc.

The other possible alternative to scanning is a digital camera with macro or good close up capabilities. Hav'n't tried it myself but its a thought.

Happy shopping

Alan

Thanks for the input all,.. that digi cam idea is a pretty good one. Anyways I went to Frys today and checked out the various scanners. The canons are nice, but way to big for my notebook bag. I need something with less of a footprint, I plan on always keeping it in the bag. I rarely work at home anymore, always on the road or outside. I ended up buying the Travelscan 464 http://www.syscaninc.com/art/products/ts_464m.jpg (http://www.syscaninc.com/prod_ts_464.html)

it's 600X1200 dpi, more than I'll ever use though. I don't mind tearing pages out of the sketchbook to scan. Actually I don't even have a sketch book. I usually sketch on loose paper and toss it in the trash once it's scanned. My sketches are just a starting point for a digital finish.

So far it's working great. It's TWAIN so I can scan directly into photoshop. It seems sturdy and is only 11.8 ounces. I'm all about lightweight portability. My notebook is barely over 4 lbs, so my bag with all its contents, i would guess, barely breaks the 7 lbs barrier.

oh yeah, I saw this HP scanner that was pretty nice. http://h10003.www1.hp.com/digmedialib/prodimg/lowres/c00188649.gif (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/15179-64195-215155-15202-215155-303640.html)
It's only 3.04 lbs and .75 inches thick. Too bad its w x d dimensions are too big. It's something to keep in mind for a home station though.
