you can find my new short movie at www.delivery.framebox.de (http://www.delivery.framebox.de/)

Sorry for the big files, but 9 Minutes Animation cause a lot of data. I hope you download it anyway. I made that production during the last 6 months and its my first character animation and modelling. It's a mix between motion capturing and keyframing and its produced in 720p resolution (1280x720). I used 3ds max 7 and After Effects. The lighting is done with scanline renderer and shadow maps, no GI and no plugins.

I am looking forward to read your feedback, critics and comments...

Regards,

Till Nowak

wow. WOW! I really liked that a lot... need to watch it again :)

I am by no means an expert, but I liked the look and the feel. Seemed like everything fit well together. The only thing that stood out to me that could have been done better was the engines on the ship that delivered the package. I cannot tell you what it was specifically; they just did not feel quite right.

Anyway, pay no attention to me :) Great work and concept!

i will definitely show this to anyone who'll care to watch it.

Ok this has to go on the front page and festivals around the world. A Film with a strong creative idea to carry it is always a winner! And this is well executed as also.
The best I've seen in a while.

Wow, good work, the concept was truly just great.

I loved the shots, the only criticism I would provide is that in too many scenes the camera is always panning and moving, and it's always a clean spline movement that feels just too awkward. Maybe some follow-through could've helped, or using more still shots.

Overall, just amazing. The last shot is very powerful.

great short!
perfect rendering too

even though i know the "secret" of the "delivery"
i still wanna know what will happen next

creative idea

one thing that could be space to be improved is the animation (body and facial) of the old man. it seems too smooth

a very good one

Wonderful. Excellent work. Great concept. Really nice atmosphere and lighting. Sound and music worked really well. I really liked it.

My only crits would be that the animation of the man seemed a little stiff in places, especially his hands. And there was a time or 2 when his feet were not firmly planted, they slipped just a little.

But this gets a big thumbs up from me.

I'll watch it many more times. :applause:

Excellent work! The story and film-making elements are first class, I too think this should be entered into festivals because the idea behind it is so strong. I'm very impressed that you made this all within 6 months...

Wow, excellent short! Not many compliments I could give that havn't already been said. Great atmosphere, story, and visuals. While the character was obviously not quite on par with the rest of the production because it was your first, I didn't find it detracting at all to the short.

Thank you for your positive feedback! Makes me really happy :-) Well yes, the character animation could be better as you recognized, too....

I am planning to make some making-of-material, but have little time between several freelance-jobs. but here are already two little pieces of background information, i hope i can do some more soon...

Yoo!
Thats a very cool movie.
The music is totally awesome, before the credits i was wonderin if you engaged an orchestra!!
Lucky that that box was delivered to such a good guy! Hopefully he didnt made so much test when he discovered its functionment ;)
That was a great idea, and a great movie. Its incredible that you made this in 6 months!
With 15 guyz like you we could have a 2 hours movie better than many big budget ones in six months!!

Hope you have a good bandwith, youll need it ;)

http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif Excellent!

The only thing I saw that seemed off, just a little, was the speed that the smoke from the stacks rose ... it seemed too fast, especially when the city was viewed from the house (in the far distance). Still, absolutely awesome work! First rate story, too. Can't wait to show this to others ... gonna send a link to this to several right now (I know someone who's a master gardener ... she's gonna love this ... Heh heh). http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Overall the piece was very well done. The idea was extremely well thought out and executed. You set the mood well through the score and the lighting. The camera movemnt and cinematography were as good as any others I have seen. My only crit would be the old man. He didn't really fit in with the rest of the environment. The backgrounds and machines look extremely realistic thanks to your amazing texturing, but the modeling of the man and his animation are not at the same level as everything else in terms of realism. But that only brought me out of the story a very little bit once or twice. Otherwise you have an amazing piece.

I've been reading this forum for over a year and have never felt the need to reply to anyone's work - until now. This is a fantastic piece of work that you should be very proud of! The textures, lighting and music draw you into this strange sad world and make you immediatly care for this sad man. All that said here are my observations on clip. The engines of the delivery vehicle seem like they should have some sort of exhaust coming from it - Like heat waves or smoke. Also the animation of the man, as stated by other reviewer, is a little lacking. Somewhat stiff and 'floating.' For example when he lifts the box from its container he does it as if it has no weight. Like he is lifting a feather - is that how you wanted it? Anyway... great over all! Two thumbs way up!

percydaman
02-26-2005, 06:11 PM
agreed, its pure genius.... My only crit, other then the others, is that this would have looked even more beautiful if you had used some more advanced lighting (area lights, GI etc etc)

Once again, inspiring work!

Wow! Very, very nice piece w/ strong lighting, great composition, nice animation, and a very well executed idea! I agree w/ both mehdianim (that this should go to festivals for recognition) and Zell: You moved the camera too much when it wasn't necessary. Sometimes it's best left on a tripod, so to speak in this case.

A small crit in an otherwise amazing short! 5 stars :applause:

Excellent! Thanks for the free entertainment today! I'm gunna watch it again.

Only crit, it seems like the lead character is waiting for the camera to ease just before giving the plant a few drops of water. I would have him enter the frame (or doing something) rather than just standing there waiting to act.

I hope this brings you much prosperity and leads to more great paying gigs.

Brilliantly done!! I commend you for making a sci fi story more about 'ordiniary' life. The only thought I had was that the final shot sorta forgot about the guy. It's great that he cleaned up the planet, but honestly I care more about the guy than the planet ;)

I loved the concept and the environments, only critique i would have is that the animation of the old guy was stiff most of the time and there were couple shots where his feet were sliding or he seemed out of balance. Other than that it was a very good piece overall. Great textures.

Exxxcellent, Great One really!
Schööön gemacht!

The Idea is splendid, when did You come with that? (also in the beginning of this six months?!?) The Execution is cool, kind of "Big Cinema like". Some great Shots with Camera movement and DOF, i especially like the Beginning in this regard. (but don't overdo it with pan man! ;)) Another part i really like is the Breaking Sequence where He lift's the City up into the Sky. You'r really getting the Feeling two Levels interacting here. The Music is nice but in some parts not my Style. There it's too orchastratic and "present" for my taste. The Credits Music sounded very nice to me.

So what could be made better in the next Animation? :)

I think the Character Movement and Believability would be an area of Focus.
I know Your Problems very well, i'm struggling with animation right now too (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=211360). It just needs a Lot of practice and dedication. ;)
Another area would be Lighting. (although many people seem to have a different view here.) Although You'r really good in faking GI Lighting, i can still see that it's faked. Shadow Maps and a Lot of Spots and Omnis just can't get to the real GI feeling. Especially cause newer Renderers also have better Materials that would suit perfectly in the guys Home. But i have to admit You probably need a LOT more CPU Power to render this with GI. Try Vray in this regard. :wise:

Ok, enough for now. Nice Piece.
Kurzer Short, großes Kino.
Immer weiter so.
Bye

Hi everybody,

i`m really impressed by the lot of feedback. makes me very happy, that you like my short that much. and the critics on the animation is really true, i expected that critics... and i am sure the critics about the lot of camera movement are somehow true, too, i am just not too experienced with that. about the lighting i just can say that i rendered from the second month of production parallel to the production without interruption on up to 8 PCs. With real GI I would have needed even more PCs. But its right that the lighting could be better if more processing power would have been there.

@geddart: yes, the storywriting was during the first week of my 6th months. I originally wanted to develop it somme months earlier but i wrote 10 stories and wasnt satisfied with them until i found the final story when the time was already running away...

Again thank you a lot for your positive feedback. I will try to bring up some more making-of-PDFs if somebody is interested in that.

Till

Nice idea, but it feels very gratuitous. The biggest flaw I think (more than the character model/animation) is that the camera is animated in almost every shot. If you used an animated camera more sparingly it would be a lot more powerful.

02-27-2005, 02:10 AM
just wow. I'm in awe sitting here. It was absolutely beautiful. Like some people have said before, the animation is a little stiff, but I mean, the depth and beauty to the film is just inspiring. I absolutely loved the music, my hat's off to the adreas and matthias hornschuh. This is one of the best pieces I've seen on cgtalk. Your originality and execution is amazing. That was seriously one of the best animated shorts I've ever seen, ever. Personally, I think the camera movement was excellent. Interspersing still and moving shots may be the general ideal, but I think in this case the way you did it was great. I'd love to see future work of yours.

This really was a clever idea. Strong points: Lighting/atmosphere, sense of scale when the man is manipulating things inside the box. Weak points: some aspects of the character's animation (especially the feet while walking), long, slowly moving camera shots. The one thing that really bugged me about the piece is the fact that the box came from the city.

Good stuff for sure. Good story. Good look. Good sound. Well done.

Crits...

I dunno if it is intentional or not but the shirt texture seems to be sliding around the surface of the shirt. Maybe a moire effect? The shirt screams fix me. The feet slide around a tiny bit when next to the coffe table and a few other places.

But no doubt it is a very nice project, well executed. Thank you for sharing with us.

Yesss! So so sweet. Brilliant concept. I normally lose interest on a slow-paced 9-minute short, but this one had me glued to my seat. The opening with the big plant and the device of the flashlight were genuis. The music was a really nice complement.
If you could get some animators on it, this would be a classic, and festival magic.
I would also agree with criticisms concerning the constant camera movement. Save it for shots that need it, like the dissolves that showed him thinking in various places around the room.
Wow,

Most of the people stole my thunder regarding crits:
1) I agree with the person who said the guy looked like he was waiting for the camera to stop before he added water to the plants at the opening.
2) I also felt it was strange that the package came from the city which would put the city completely in the hands of this old man.
3) Agree that the man was somewhat crude compared to other elements of the film.
4) Also, another point no one touched on was the fact that this huge flying delivery truck hovers loudly overhead to deliver a package, and the old guy doesn't seem to notice it until he hears a ding in his mailbox.
Now, it may sound like I didn't like the film from all these little crits, but I really did. I just think with a few little fixes, this really good film could be great!
I loved the cinematic feel of the piece, including the opening title.
I really love the design of the city and the angles you chose for the shots.
I liked the way you showed the passage of time with the old man thinking what to do with this great new "gift" he had in his possession.
I really like how you pulled back through the window to reveal the giant flowers at the end.
It wasn't unexpected, but it wasn't dissapointing either. Overall, a breathtaking piece of work done by someone who will no doubt be a force to reckon with in the world of 3D animation. I hope to see more of your work soon.

02-28-2005, 11:36 PM
@AbsolutionZero @xenfive: I worked on this for 6 months almost day and night (with one month interruption because of too much freelancing). The story writing and concept work and rendering is included in this period.

@webhead: thx for your comments. it means nothing that the package comes from the city. its just because there is located the main post office and all mail of the region comes from the city. but the true sender could still be anybody anywhere. I let it open, it could be god, or aliens ore some company...or maybe the illuminati... even myself doesn't know. Somehow the old man in his exile becomes the chosen one to change the world.
That he does not hear the loud vehicle on his balcony and then hears the sound from his mailbox is really strange... I never thought about that but you are right... One explenation could be that he hears the vehicle but doesn't care because it could be any vehicle but the special sound of his mailbox tells him that he got mail... but...yes its not a really good explenation, i admit ... :-)

@iArt: Wow, someone's burning my movie on a disk.... :-) thanks

I think your explanations are somewhat plausible, it's just that in a short film, with limited or no time for exposition, it becomes more difficult to introduce new elements in the story without sometimes misleading or confusing the viewer. Our audience doesn't know our story as well as we do, so we have to put ourselves in their shoes sometimes and ask ourselves how will the audience interpret this scene going only by what I have chosen to show them.
Also, there are some things we want the audience to guess at or use their own imagination or interpretation. Some of which you touched on. Some of the questions that make the film interesting are: Where exactly did that crazy box come from? Who sent it? Why was it sent to the old man? What gives it it's powers?
I will definately want to keep a copy of this film around and will definately learn something from studying it.

Awesome work!

For a one-man-band, this is definetely an epic.
As many others said, the character animation could be better. Also, the hard-edged CG look could be improved with some more fill lights, but overall it's a fantastic piece.

...and ask ourselves how will the audience interpret this scene going only by what I have chosen to show them.
then again, every detail could be laid out in black and white for the audience, and still there would be conflicting opinions. One thing i have begun to realize while watching people's reaction to art, is that the audience's imagination has less to do with their approval or disapproval of a piece, than the emotional baggage they have carried with them to the piece.

Some of the questions that make the film interesting are: Where exactly did that crazy box come from? Who sent it? Why was it sent to the old man? What gives it it's powers?
Yes. And, was that old man even meant to receive it? Perhaps it was meant for someone else. ;)

I just want to say that this was a beautifully told story. Very clever and a lot of meaning behind it. It drew me in and I was intrigued through out . Yes like any short it has its faults but this is definilty an accomplishment!:applause:

I liked the whole of it, but what helped me to really enjoy it was how unhurried it seemed. Like when the character was shown contemplating what this all might mean or could mean, by his various poses throughout the area. I also think the eye behind the glass gave him a good exaggerated appearance, along with his other "unlovely" fetures. It made me feel kind of sad for him.

I say I liked it to break it down Id say 25% goes to good lighting an other 25% goes to the animation it self and the remaing 50% goes to the music. I liked it alot!

I truly liked it. The lighting was great, I liked the autmosphere created. The Music was also nice, and it went very well with each frame of the story. I liked the way you showed him perplexed on what to do, about his new gift. I am however suprosed that he did not just toss the city into an ashtray, lol.
The whole thing was great, if your guy looked more pleasing to the eye ( he was well made and did look good, but he was a bit cartoonish) what I am to say , is if he looked liek a full on human replica, like some famous actor or whatver it would have been quite creepy to watch.
The moral of the story, I am not sure what it really is. But seeing as the only person there who embraced nature ended up with a gift from goodness knows who, a gift that allowed for him to do what he did , fantastic.

When I saw the short film in college, during one of the Studio Max classes, I was in awe when I saw the concept story for this short film. Very original, and a good thinker when it comes to that kind of science and physics.

As for the construction of the film, it was nicely made in anyway; lighting, modelling (scenes), and the camera motion was top notch. The only thing that was a mere draw back, and it's the same as most of the other posters had mention was the character. Other than that, keep up the good work on your future projects.

I must say this short brought a tear to my eye.

For some reason it was just VERY powerful, your character had a depth to him giving us the viewers the need to create a background for him. You leave it open, and his depth doesn't just "allow" us to create a fantasy world, but it requires us to in a very delightful manner. In fact, the presence you've given this world of yours, even gives the flowers a personality.

Very good, I give this 2 thumbs up. I must say that even though the character animation was a little short, it somehow fit with the character. This gave me the feeling of a lonely old man, who doesn't quite get around like he used to.

Would love to see more work later on down the road from you.

Beautiful, it sort of reminded me of a short SF story "And he built a crooked house" by Robert A Heinlein. /ERic

A really fresh concept and quite an entertaining short; however, the character acting could have been slightly better done imo. Keep up the great work :)

Nice work. My advise for future projects would be to keep your camera still. The most important object in any scene is the camera. It tells your story, and keeps your audience focused. I found that your camera was moving quite a bit, which made it a bit distracting. I also agree with an earlier comment about a bigger focus on character animation.

Hope that will be helpful.

Well I'm going to have to jump on the bandwagon here and agree with everyone that your short was terrific.

Sure, the character animation could be improved, but I found that it didn't take away from your highly original storyline.

I really appreciated how you kept us guessing about his motives for digging up the city until the point where he turns around and is holding the flower...that was one of those "ah ha!" moments for me...where the plot truly had a surprising twist.

As others have recommended, you should definitely submit this to some film festivals.

This is one fantastic piece of storytelling. Great job mr. Nowak!

Although I'm just an innocent bystander, your brilliant story just made me signup and give you some thoughts I haven't seen yet in the other remarks...

1. It seems to me that in the final shot, before the camera backs out of the old man's rear window, the giant plant should already be seen through his balcony windows?
2. From a physics standpoint, I would say the engines of the postal-vehicle delivering the package may need to be aimed downwards more. For it to hover and fly so slowly, the thrust would mainly needed to stay in the air. OK, not that big of a deal :)
3. Positive: Maybe the overall animation of the old man might be better, but I feel that where it counts you did do a great job. The facial expressions of the hero when he just put down the city next to his plant, and ponders for a few seconds what to do next, works really really really great imo. Oscar-moment!

All in all... well you heard the rest. It's OK ;)

Congrats! Great work.

thanks for your feedback. yes, the character animation and the camera movement I have to improve for the next movie...

@simon.wt: perhaps you can see in the pdfs that i use quite a "strange" modelling technique. I get very fast results by turning the usual way of modelling around: I often make the texture first and then model the object out of the texture, starting with a plane and the texture mapped on it. This way is a little bit experimental and the meshes are sometimes a bit dirty. But for a free non-commercial project without any client I really enjoyed this intuitive way...

@eph: (1)you are right that in this view the flower could be visible, but I wanted to stretch the supspense until the moment when you see the giant flower... but you are right, this is not 100% correct... (2) well, it hast a super-anti-gravity-X8277-push-mechanism so that the angle of the engines is correct that way ;-)

@peteboy: cool, thanx for the tipp! I will be there! But I think there will be no new animation, all the rendering and compositing would be too much to do it again...

Regards,

Till
