The rules....

Welcome to the cgtalk sketch group.

We will try to post one of these topics once a day for your enjoyment.

These are the rules:
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* 640 x 480 / 480 x 640 OR 800 x 600 /600 x 800
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.

Good luck

-Roberto

At the risk of starting another "we worship at the altar of Anayla" stalker thread... I seem to recall Anayla commenting in an earlier topic how she dressed up in a nice dress for character inspiration... and how she now has butt length braids...

Anayla, we await your very inspired take on this topic!

(As I have been busy on personal projects I have only done one sketch to date, but I have enjoyed the creativity exhibited here immensly and look forward to partcipating more as time permits. I am learning a lot from all your wonderful points of view and artistic styles.)

Hello,

This is my first drawing with painter, first drawing with a tablet too...funny...during sketch I was frustrated because I would like to turn the tablet like I turn a paper sheet to place it in a more convenient way...I need to learn how to make straight and smooth strokes in all directions without turning the tablet :) (specially diagonals from top left to bottom right...do you have a trick for that?)

Hope you like it. It's inspired from a small sculpture on my desk.
Painter, small wacom, 1 hour.

Not only is she naked, but she is thinking :)

Well Roberto, I hate to betray your faith in the good taste of people on this forum, but what do you want me to do? You give me a topic like this, and my mind just starts to go in some strange directions, and once that starts, there's nothing I can do but follow.

deaderthanred - Your painting looks just fine to me. (I see your a fan of Vallejo's too):)

crazy3dman - Oh, that's cool!

augustus - Man's anatomy is harder!! (no curves for reference, you know)

inaction - If you can do THAT without reference, you can do a lot!

White Rabbit
02-24-2005, 10:11 PM
Deaderthanred - it is nice, but as you're asking for advice and no-one seems to answer, I'll try and give my modest contribution (which is only worth what it's worth...): maybe the buttocks-line (don't jnow the technical term for it  ) could be a bit rounder, so one doesn't look bigger than the other.

Also, but this is veeeery hypothetical, it just very slightly caught my eye, the lighting on the right forearm doesn't exactly fit the rest of the body. Can't say anything about the hand though, I usually disguise mine in excessive lines until it's just a general shape  .

I do hope this helps in any small way. I love the flying eye though :)

CodeNothing
02-24-2005, 10:18 PM
Deaderthanred- looks nice! i actualy kind of like the hand. its structure doesnt look off, and it looks evil the way it is. I dunno if evil is what you were going for. the eye is great too.

Crazy3Dman- awsome! you got a little twisted side to ya dont you? Or mabie you just know the same people i do that work at disneyland. some of them have... er... interesting night jobs....

augustus

cat drawn with mouse :D

Oh please, not another avatar war:)

3dman-> Sexy!

deaderthanred-> The hand looks fine, just paint it. You need a better defined line under right arm, just like your sketch. Also i think left side of her ridge should look somewhere between your sketch and the painting. Hmm, tone down the shadow under left, err, something maximus (butt:)) and... oh well  You're painthing way better than I can do.

SoniaNotRed-> I don't know, but male anatomy looks easier to me. Maybe posture that is, making things soft and feminine not so easy. I've bought a new anatomy book (Anatomy for the Artists by Jeno Barcsay) and trying to develop my skills. Maybe in time my thoughts will change.

crazy3dman
02-24-2005, 10:55 PM
deaderthanred - Hope you don't mind me doing this. If you do mind, just tell me to stay away from your art and I'll shut up. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I just noted a few small things I noticed.

The sketch and the almost done versions are really very close. I think it is just a matter of a few slightly different contours and a little different shading that makes the difference.

Hope this helps.

02-24-2005, 11:04 PM
Great work everyone. What can I say but wow. I mean, really.
Deaderthanred: I looked and I think the problem with the hand is that the finger is too big for the hand! (quick proportion tip: the hand is roughly equal to the face length. The fingers are roughly equal to the bottom of chin-bottom of nose space. Hope that helps!)
Also, it is too high up and doesn't look like it could connect properly to the hand!!
I share your problem- when I'm drawing, I find I can't 'see the forest for the trees' and usually end up dejected. I find a break helps. I do think your WIP looks better. I think it's because only the subtle curves are played up. This increases interest (no, not just male interest).......
GREAT stuff here.......sob, i want my wacom back..... I might post something later though, watch this space! :D

Jannis...just a little too graphic for my taste! Any way you could put a black box 'down there' or something!?!??!

As I look at everyone else's, I take it I did wrong by not having it look like a sketch and more like an oil painting, and using multiple layers. Uh hell... it's my first. Correct me if I've done wrong. I had fun!

And my very first CGTalk image posting. :D

**edit**
I used one of my MANY anatomy & physiology books with cadaver reference photos as study pieces for the flesh. Used 2 filters (noise and guassian blur for 1 layer), and alot of single strokes, dodging, and burning for tone & depth.

You didn't do anything wrong at all. A sketch here is very loosely defined as pretty much any image you can create. I live for layers. I think I used about 15 layers on mine.

Very scary cool image.

This is my first post here I think. I hope I'm not as bad as I think compared to others. I want to win one of these contests eventually but I'm afraid pencil sketches won't do it :-/ Anyways, here it is. 30 min in a notebook with a mechanical pencil :) Funny how I have sketch pads and pencils/charcoal since I'm an art major but I chose to use a mechanical pencil and notebook :) I suck at doing hair too btw :-/ I don't have a scanner so I used a digital camera, it's a really nice camera but it's dark in here so it's not the best quality. It'll do though. Anywho, sorry the long post, I'd really like some feedback on this one too!!! Thanks :)

Not only is she naked...

all and all this took about 1.5 - 2 hours.

Thanx for the feedback, you're most likely right. I twisted that poor girl around a little harsh. I was trying to really put her in motion and felt a little awkward all the way, actually... well, tried to see how far and quick I can go without any reference. Not ment to be an excuse...or hmm...yeah, maybe ment to be a bit of an excuse. I still have to learn too much....

So thanx again!

ms@zx. Thank you.

mybutterflyiris. Yes, actually I did a little. For these ones I tried using prismacolor black on markerpaper smeared over with alcohol then a little detail and some white.
I love using prismacolor, but hadn't tried the alcohol or marker paper before, they worked good. The only thing I don't like about prismacolor is that you can't really erase anything, so once you do a dark mark your stuck with it.

haysuess
02-26-2005, 08:00 AM
My art teacher says Prismacolor can be erased easily on certain paper I forget which kind though. And polychromos is good to use on paper that prismacolor can't be erased well on. Hope the helped but you know more than me so :-/
