1 - Selected edges on subdiv surfaces are very difficult to see. Selected edges are highlighted in orange but from many perspectives this orange line will be over-written by the un-selected color, making the edge appear to be unselected. Is there any way around this?

2 - MJ Poly tools has some nice ring/loop select tools but they dont work on subdiv surfaces...does anything?

1. Change the subdiv selected edge colour. Maya's default colours are a bit bright in comparison with the light background.

2. Maya's subdivs aren't the best for actually modeling with, in my opinion. Sure you can use Polygon Proxy for Subdiv's, but that's slow. You could use mj's poly tools on subdivs though, just make sure you're in polygon proxy mode.

1 - It's not the color that is the problem. Observe:

The edges being pointed to ARE selected. It is just that the angle I look at them determines whether or not they appear selected or not...

2 - Okay, it does work in proxy mode...but not in standard mode when I view edges even though it looks the same as proxy mode. I'm not modelling in subdiv surfaces in Maya, the stuff was already modelled elsewhere, I'm just trying to smooth/crease it for rendering.

If not subdivs, what should I use?

1. I haven't really noticed that problem, so I can't comment :(

2. If you're just creasing your model, then just stay with subdivs. If you're actually modeling something inside Maya, use smooth proxy, as it's a little faster and easier to use.

I've had the same visability problem for selected poly edges when usind a linux system. Is that what your using? I really have no idea why this happens, but It never really hampered my work.
Also, this probably wont help solve the display problem, but you can hit ctrl b to toggle the background color to different shades of grey. (From "Maya 6 Killer Tips").

jgibz,

nope--I'm using winXP. It probably has something to do with my graphics card, because edges etc sometimes disappear when I use Silo on this computer as well, which do not happen on my other computer. I'm running a GeForce4 Ti 4200 with the latest drivers. You're lucky that it didn't hamper your workflow because it sure as heck is hampering mine.

I think you're probably right in suspecting that it's something to do with your display card. Something important to note is that newest drivers don't always mean best as far Maya compatibility goes. That said however, I've been experiencing really, really good and stable performance from the 67.22 drivers on my 6800GT.
But, if that's of no help on your particular card, you could try some of the various suggestions here: http://cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=128410&page=1&pp=15 (It's quite an old thread now, though may probably more helpful for older cards)

good luck!

If you have a quadro card you should turn on antialias wireframe

depending on what driver you have you may also be able to adjust the antialiasing setting from the nvidia display settings

after getting a qfx3000 off of Ebay I noticed a monster difference with Sub Ds and wireframes in general

though there are probably some great gaming cards out there with similar capabilities

Wow, you guys were absolutely right about anti-aliasing the wireframe. My settings were on "application controlled" for antialiasing...Maya seems to choose no antialiasing. I turned it on to 4x...and now there are no more disappearing problems! The view port looks much softer and nicer too :) Oddly enough, I feel as though the responsiveness of the viewport increased if anything...I would expect turning up the antialiasing to make it more sluggish!
