Hi Guys ,

I just priced the following system from boxx:

Dual Opteron Model 250
4GB DDR400 ECC (4 DIMMS) runs at 400MHz with 248's and higher
NVIDIA Quadro FX 3400 256MB G-DDR3
80GB 7200rpm Serial ATA 8MB cache drive
500GB (2x250GB) 7200rpm Serial ATA RAID 0 Array
16x Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer with software

and it comes to 6000$ includes 3 year warranty also. I dont know the motherboard so couldnt list it.

Now the reason i posted this thread is not because I hate boxx or anything , but because so many people say "of you can get it for so much cheaper if you build it yourself" , which might be true but i have no clue where to start :)

so i would greatly appreciate if you guys tell me how much would it cost to build the above computer if you built it yourself.

Let the price hunt begin :)

dual opteron 250: approx. $1400
4 GB Registered RAM: $940 (assuming 4 1Gig sticks)
Quadro 3400: $1145
80Gig SATA drive: $70
500Gig SATA drive: $400 (Newegg only sells up to 400 Gig drives, so I rounded up to the next hundred)
16x Dual Layer DVD RW +-: [b]$54

total cost: $4009

Not including all the other stuff you'd need though:)

yeah, don't forget about the case, fans, power supplies, keyboard, mouse, O.S., support .etc...
+ the motherboard that's not mentioned.

Also, if you've never attached a heatsink to a processsor before and dont know anyone who can physically help, you might want to stick with a turnkey system.

exactly. All in all in my opinion its not worth the $500 in savings you get when you build it yourself. I'll go with boxx.

Thanks for the help guys.

I am also going to be getting a similar system from boxx soon. I was wondering if anyone knows when the new opteron processors are going to come out? The 250's are a bit expensive right now.

Ali,

The 252s are out are priced where the 250s used to be. The 250s have dropped in price to where the 248s used to be and so on down the line.

I'll just wait till mid march and decide then. By the way , Does Boxx have a booth at Game developers conference this year Ed?

I have same Dual Opteron system and Two Pentium-4 (2.4 & 3.0E) for $6150 bucks setup for my friend. The Opteron is the dev system. He didn't want a Monitor So add a 500 bucks for that and you can get a Dual Opteron and Two-P4 for $6650. Go figure out rest of it. This was a full fledged sytem (all three of them).

BUT, if you have no experience in assembling systems, I suggest you get their system as it comes with support and is pretty great for modeling work

Ali,

We've never done GDC. This year we're putting more focus on the large shows and lots of effort into visiting users groups around the country. You'll hear more on that from me soon.
