View Full Version : Mech Concept Vector Art

My friend Joel draws a lot of great pencil concept sketches but doesn't know much about creating and refining art on the computer. I've wanted to work with him on a project for awhile now, so I picked this mech concept of his and set to work. My goal is a "vector painting" of some sort. Right now I'm working on the vector lineart... a painstaking process, but kind of meditative in a way :)
Comments and critiques are welcome. I'm curious to know what people think of the concept... it seems pretty unique to me.

Looking good so far Nate. I can't wait to see some of the shading action going on. Keep up the good work.
I understand what you mean about vector art being somewhat meditative... sort of how I felt pumping out those animal characters this week.

i like the concept ..the sketch looks neat too...eager to see the outcome....not sure how the mech is standing though i mean will it have legs or some kinda support ??

nattnewman: Thanks! I'm using Illustrator. I've never used Freehand, actually...
Twozzok: people do say I have a lot of patience... it might be overkill, but I've never done a project quite like this, so part of it is experimentation.
zagor: the mech is actually floating. It's kind of an "aqua" mech that floats above ground and can also travel underwater. Some of the forms are inspired from undersea creatures. So it's cut off at the bottom right now... the tentacles would be about three times as long as they look to be in the concept sketch.

You *are* breaking all of it up into layers so you can do a nifty 2.5-D Flash animation, right? Just kiddin'.
Great work bud, can't wait to see some shading action going on.
:PS: One comment on the concept, is that is is fairly flat and straight-on. Hopefully by adding those long tentacles flowing around (like Doc-Oc from Spidey2) and adding shading you can make it really pop out. JMTC.

Here's the final lineart for the mech. Depending on what kind of environment I put him in, I might make the bottom tentacles a bit more "active". There's going to be some cool electricity effects and glowing orbs at the very bottom center.

Unfortunately I don't get to work on this very often, but I have made some progress and would like to post a color work in progress. I've laid out basic colors on the large parts, and I'm working with gradient meshes, starting at the top left. Color is fun!

Ooooh... I like it. The top center pieces have a nice metallic look going already. It makes me want to do some mech modeling...
A friend and I tried to start a mechwarrior-style 3D animatied short back a few years ago (when I was still using Lightwave) but it never got off the ground since I was still learning modeling... I think I got one arm done in the time it took him to do two whole mechs and a few walk cycles... LOL.
Anyways, good work ... I'm drooling for more updates. :drool:
