View Full Version : hard drive error?
YankyBJeans 02-24-2005, 12:24 AM I rebooted my machine today, after a long uptime, and it wont launch windows. Instead I get this error during the usual windows 2000 splashscreen, under the progress bar:
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\System32\Config\Systemd
What does this mean? How do I fix it? I tried doing a repair with the installation disk and it didnt help. I need to back the data up off this drive and that will be a pain if I have to reformat, as wouldl reinstalling everything I use regularly so formatting is a last option. I can temporarily use another drive as the main os drive but that is just as much a pain to setup as is reformatting.
What are my options here?
Thanks
Yanky

update:
using another drive as the main os drive, and using the drive that failed to boot properly as a slave, I can see all the data on the "failed boot" drive perfectly. It makes no odd sounds and hasnt had any other errors. I will back up the data on the drive just in case but I wonder why the files necessary to boot became corrupted or missing... If I knew what to look for I would just try copying the files from the good drive to the bad one.
Still eagerly waiting for someone to give me a way to fix the other drive without having to reinstall windows. Now that I have done this once tonight, and remembered how much I hate setting everything up from scratch, I really dont want to do it again on my main drive.

\Windows\System32\Config\Systemd
Thats ur missing or corrupt file, so you can try copying from ur good installation, or, you can use the recovery console...which is more complex, if you don't know how to use it, so just try copying that file over first. After you replace it, try booting from it again and see what happens.

the thing is, I dont see that file. theres a "system" file which has no extension, a "system.alt" file and a "system.sav" file. No systemd file anywhere. The two os installs both have a "system" file but they differ in size by about 30 meg.
any other ideas?

just in case anyone else runs across this, it seems to be a somewhat frequent problem and is caused by a microsoft update, which is why it didnt happen to me till i finally rebooted. The error message indicates a corruption of your SYSTEM registry hive but there is a fix using the repair console.

Hope that helps anyone who might run across this. Seems to be somewhat frequent.

Crossing my fingers that the fix actually works....
