Nice one :)
I worked on a fighting game, im a StreetFighter addict and Im a kungfu Movies/DragonBall Fan:)
I really liked the Red character and the overall hands animations are hot.
Just wonderin.. does japanese people Write from left to right or from top bottom?
I know they read from top-bottom right-left but it may be different for writing...

Congratulations! Very funny stuff. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/grin.gif Love the characters you've created ... and the caligraphy and brushwork are beautiful. The beginning is so cinematic! Very inspirational.

On your site it mentions that you work with max and maya (among other apps) ... just out of curiosity, which apps did you use for this piece?

One of the funniest short i've ever seen! VERY creative and clever design. The chinese caligraphy at the beginning is awesome and the fighter game thing is cool.

Well, we used Maya for all the 3D part. Photoshop for all the texture and images editing. Then we choose After Effects for all the video editing, it may seem strange to some people but I don't like Premiere at all, it crashes very often and also After FX rendering engine seems a lot more faster.

It's great to hear that you liked it!!! We are very pleased to recieve good critics about it, and we would like to know who didn't liked it and why....It may help us learn a lot!!!

Thanks Modi, I'm Santi Hurtado, from Palma VFX Spain. Maybe you don't remember but we played Unreal online once while we were in the making of LOTR: The Third Age.

I have to say that almost everything has been done just by two persons in a time lapse of 6 months, working hard and trying to do our best. Lot of things could have been better, but we needed to have a deadline in the ind in orther to finish this one and start looking for a job.

This is the most valuable price we can get....We are happier than ever!!!

THANKS A LOT!!!

Great work!

I found the intro a bit long (especially on replays) but on the other hand, it enhance the initial gag (when Kyotaro finally unveils his not-so-honorable side) so much.

I've watched it over and over since I downloaded it yesterday and it still lighten my mood so much.

Simply awesome!

Great job guys. I loved it.

Crits:
- I think that was one of the best title sequesces I've seen in a long time. Absolutely loved it.
- I was going to say that 1:10 through 2:33 was a bit drawn out but I just watched it again and I think it's great the way it is. I like how it builds the feeling and emotion you get.
- 2:34 through 2:47 is great. I love the animation and poses you hit. Very nice.
- I loved how kokoro quivers with fear when ryotaro walks by all calm cool and collected.
- Funny bit with the crotch kick, and I love the pose.
- Camera angles up to this point are SUPERB.
- 4:20. This is where I think it takes a turn for the worse. I think you guys pulled off the style very well. NAILED the sound.
- 4:47 through 5:00. The graphics and stlye are great here.
- 5:01 through 5:08 is very nice. I actually felt like I was playing mortal combat or something.
- 5:09 through 5:30. This could have been kept out. This whole segment is unoriginal in every way. And whats up with the batman smoke puffs? It clashes completely. Of course maybe that's what you were going for... in that case... good job.
- 5:43 through 6:06. Although funny, I think that this drug on a bit. And I'm not particularly fond of the fact that kokoro is above the black divider. Like he's one layer to high :)
- 6:37 through 6:41. I really liked how you incorporated the 2d with that sequence. Very nice.
- 7:06 through 7:17 was awesome. I wish you guys would have incorporated more of this angle, style and animation into the short.
- Loved the ending also. Great idea... but P2P? cmon. Why didn't you thank the lady that gave you a cookie at age 8 despite the fact that your mom said no cookies.
- Honestly I think from 4:20 to 6:15 should be removed completely. I think this is the weakest part of the short.

Of course this is all imo. And sorry for the long post. Take care guys.

Totally love it. The beginning also felt a bid drawn out.... at the same time it makes a nice build up and introduces characters pretty well. :-)

Great job. :-)

02-24-2005, 03:26 AM
the credits took almost as long as the movie.

I like the idea...and the animation and direction were great...but it seemed *TOO* wacky. Especially with that uber-traditional opening...

Your graphic style is excellent. I really like the beginning and the brush work. The story didn't pay off for me though. It didn't seem like it went anywhere, and I couldn't help but feel I'd seen a lot of those jokes before( the anime flashing motion lines for instance ) Somebody menioned that it runs a bit long, and I'll second that too. But great graphic quality, keep up the good work.

IM JALOUUUS!!
I would like to know if you made somethin special so your thread have 1500 more views in only some hours! i would like my short to be seen by the most people possible and im watchin it very often, and i also watched yours and hours ago there were least people that watched it than mine and now its 3 time more viewed! is there a special strategy or thats just the way it is? :P

I would also like to know what kinda web host you have since i almost exploded my upload limit for the month with 3 time less viewing of my thread :S
If you could mirror my movie it would be cool too :P

Nyways, dont take that bad, i pretty liked your short i would just know how to pump up my views and what kinda webhost you have, so more people could see mine too!

still downloading,
but I am really happy to
a.) see a short on cgtalks frontpage again. must have been month since I saw the last movie up there ... keep the animation alive !!!

b.) I apprechiate it a lot that you make the movie downloadable as you are finished. most people finishing theyr shorts nowadays hold them back to show them at the festivals first, or even just sell it as DVD. When I really like a short (and I am sure yours is one of them) and I see it at a festival, although I know it from the web, I am enjoying it even more.
When I didnt like it than its also cool, cause then I know that this gives me 5 minutes to go to the toilette. :argh:

Wooow man....Thanks a lot to all of you encouraging and telling us pretty things...THAT'S THE COOLEST PRIZE WE CAN GET FROM OUR HARD WORK...REALLY.

It's have been a lot of time desiring to show it to the people out there, fests are a cool thing, but we think that all this kind words and crits are unvaluable....

Visualboo: Thaks a lot for all the time you took for doing your crits. Sincerely it's been cool to see that someone has dedicated a part of his time to watch it with calm and analyze it "deeply".

I agree in some points with you, we know that there are risky things in it, as the one you mentioned about the falling of the scene and our faces in that 2D bodies...We wanted that in that exact way...but we knew it was pretty easy that someone disliked it.

The part they are running was intended to be that long, as it is a joke from the Anime series like "Captain Tsubasa" where they run for a long time without arriving nowhere...

Anyway...We need this kind of crits too as that help us to grow in knowledge and that's why this kind of forums exist.

THANKS A LOT TO EVERYBODY!!

We are super happy and will be for a long time.

Most Valuable price with no doubt at all.

Thanks Guys

Hi farhquad,

I really love your animation. Great directing, cuts, camera and characters movements.....the mix, the idea, of the "serious" element melted with the funny old videogame style are wonderful. Don't understand some critics, I would not delete anything from this short. It's so rich and detailed...it plays with every element...its incredible. But the most incredible thing is that you are seeking a job...you should find 200 hundred jobs now.

I liked it very much up until right before the fight. It had a cinematic feel (the entire intro was like real movie, which was very nicely done), and then you started to mix many clashing elements together. I know its all for humor but it didnt register to me as a viewer a very cohesive piece. When I first started watching it I had the impression that the main emphasis was story (which I think is more important than anything else), but by the end there was little of that, so I was a bit disapointed.

Even though the character models arn't exactly my taste they do animate very nicely and shows your extensive skill.

The cinematic storytelling in the beginning really gave the shortfilm a different flavour. The gameplay part was really funny, and I just loved the way U mixed this retro look in to it!

I almost laughed my shorts off :D

My favourite parts were the freeze-poses in some of the fight scenes - pulled off with an excellent sense of timing.

really fantastic. you know the world of fighting games.. :-) I love the part where the "slim" guy falls to earth like "frosted" to a stiff pixel-Image when he looses the fight and bounces with such a "physic engine"... and the beginning is very well timed, this ironic view of martial arts culture... and great characters also, they are very individual!

Top stuff, I loved the style and you really capture the ambience of a traditional Japanese tatami room perfectly. The only thing I would say (and Pinet said it above) is that Japanese is writtet top to bottom, right to left, not left to right and top to bottom. This seems a strange "mistake" given that you guys obviously have a great interest in Japanese culture and talk about calligraphy on your home page.

If I were going to be submitting this for festivals etc, I would really look at correcting those few short sequences (he says, not having to correct them himself ;) as while it might look okay to the casual observer, it isn't correct and you guys seem to have pretty high standards.

Just my thoughts.

im not sure if anyone brought this up yet, u guys could use a little more research. that is not the way a caligraphy brush is being held. this is particularly obvious to the asian viewers.

look carefully:

but this is flat out bizarre and hilarious, great work.

also i dont worry too much about getting things from asian cultures "Wrong" because for the most part i feel like asian speaking countries could care less about butchering english. i just hope any mistakes i make in that regard are as funny as most "engrish" is to me. (i lived in vietnam for a year and have been to japan, i have friends from korea and taiwan, i know people who have lived in thailand, singapore, hong kong, etc, i dont claim to be an expert about asia but i do have at least some knowledege about it..).

I apologize to all the ones that may have felt disturbed by our mistakes about the art of caligraphy. We knew that we weren't being loyal to some aspects of this kind of art and phylosophy. As you can see, Ryotaro uses a simple jar to put the ink, there's no such kind of jar, they use some kind of a plate...but well, we just wanted to get the feel, and we thought that lots of this kind of thing will seem strange to people that doesn't know a lot about japanese or chinese caligraphy.

Even though, sorry for the mistakes.

Hope you enjoyed the film.
