View Full Version : modeling in 3d studio max
CHRISA 09-16-2002, 11:35 PM Hi guys ,
about a year and a half ago I invested in a full version of 3d studio max 3.0. I'm intending to start freelance work doing character modeling for the videogames industry .Most companies now will be using max 4.0 or 5 as I can't afford to upgrade at this time does this mean that any work I do in max 3.0 will be useless to a games company using max 4.o or higher as they can't import work done in 3.0 into 4 or 5.
many thanks

No. You should be fine. The files work fine forwards, just not backwards.
Once you start makin some money.... invest in an upgrade, It'll be well worth it. Even 4.2 is way better.

I had some strange happenings while doing this, was working on max3 at home and at school we were running max4 and found that sometimes when bringing in my work from home to school I found that alot of my models somehow had gained extra faces, the model looked fine, but at a few faces from each model seemed to double up,i.e. the same face was repeated twice, sitting smack bang on top of the other "normal" face. Although saying this at the time of this happening our network at school was virused to all hell, and other people had access to my file due to the group nature of the project, so maybe one of them was trying to F*%k with my brain, which they did very successfully if the latter was true, so who the hell knows, it is meant to work fine, but throw in some annoying geeks on a mission to wreck your brain and a good virus or two and you can achieve the same results as me :)

Isnt this a general problem (bug) with Max 3 when using the 'Edit mesh' tool and generating new faces??? Although I could be wrong.
:hmm:

I think the problems will arrise if the game company has some proprietary plugins that you need to use that only work with version 4.x +. Also mapping especially when it comes to vertex colors has come along way since r3. So there will be certain limitations that r3 would impose on you that could prevent you from taking advantage of features within the game engine itself.

Just out of curiousity... do you have a freelance position possibility? Simply because from my experience, a freelance modeller (working from home/own machine...etc.) for a games Co. is pretty rare... well, I've actually never heard of it! So make sure you've checked that it's something that you can do, and if it is something you can do - make sure the Co.'s not dodgy...

AJ,
alot of people will do free/VERY cheap freelance work for an up-and-coming game company who doesn't have the pockets to afford full time employees.... .
This might not be the situation that CHRISA is in though ... but whatever ..

That's what I would describe as a 'dodgy' company!
I simply wanted to make sure that Chrisa had made sure that he'd properly researched what he was about throw himself into.
Sure, you could do modelling for a 'games company' that consists of 5 people on the internet... but that's not employment nor is it industry experience.
It was the way he phrased what he was about to do
"I'm intending to start freelance work doing character modeling for the videogames industry"
and
"Most companies now will be using max 4.0 or 5"
This leads me to believe that Chrisa doesn't actually have a company to freelance for.
This may sound cruel, but it reminded me of a lot of my friends from college who all had plans when they finished ("I'll make my own animation Co.", "I'm going to work on Star Wars designing and modelling characters"...etc.) and many of them included the mystical word 'freelance'.
It seems to conjur up a wonderful image of working at home with your feet up at your own pace before sending the finished product to the grateful company at the other end of the DSL connection... Which would often be Framestore/Rare/Weta - the fantasies ran wild, and what truely scared me was that they believed it!
So, just to reiterate, there are all these great jobs for 3D artists out there - the sad thing is that a lot of them simply don't exist...
Hope this doesn't come across as too preachy. I mean it all in good intentions.
:)

I try the 3 versions and I work with the max 4.2 version, but I also have problem to certain animation using many plugins that's dont work with the older versions of max
The mesh also transform some polygon, and sometime he read "you are using an older version scene, please save it befor opening"
Yes that's a true problem whit studio max.:)
